"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, March 29,1994 - 5a Monsma leads broomball final § The best of three champion- ship round got off to a quick start between Swampers and Monsma Electric with the Bruins scoring first just seconds into the game on a give away deep in the Swampers end. Dan Jansma made good on the setup from Ron Attwood. They added to their lead some four minutes later as Kevin Ibbittson went in alone and ripped a shot into the mesh. Swampers seemed to come to life after this goal, and coupled with four powerplays they be- gan to take control of the game and had numerous scoring op- portunities. The one they did make count was at even strength when Brian Pomeroy and Dale Lown got together to feed Dave Sampson at the edge of the Brooklin crease cutting Monsma's lead in half. The first half ended with the Bruins out in front 2-1. Probably the best scoring chance in the final half for ei- ther team went to Pomeroy with nine minutes to play when he missed on the short side with a wide open net on one of the Swampers powerplays. Try as they might neither team could muster any further offense and this one ended in the Bruins fa- vor. Next week's second game of the series goes to at 5 p.m. at the Scugog Arena. SCOTT ANDERSON / PORT PERRY STAR Port Perry Techstar were defeated 4-3 by a team from Port Elgin in Bantam B All-Ontario ac- tion on Saturday at Scugog Arena. (Front) Robert Gracie, Shane Norton, John Babcock, Matt Phillips, Jamie Trick, Ryan Puckrin, Mike Heasman and Matt Blowe. (Back) Frank Baxter (coach), Dave Bentley (trainer), Ashley Van Schelven, Gavin Baxter, Trevor Smith, Matt Baxter, Todd Parry, Brad Shanley, Jay Strickert, Dave Jamieson (coach) and Duncan Ferguson (coach). Bantam Bs settle for second spot From Page 4 ty tired and neither team was able to change the scoreboard. Port Elgin was able to score five oals in this game but, if it Radn' 't been for the superb play- ing in the first two periods of goalie John Babcock, Port Perry would not have been playing on Sunday. On Sunday, the Techstars came out flying and only 17 sec- onds into the game, Jamie Strickert scored our first goal on a great effort after linemates Gavin Baxter and Ryan Puck- rin along with Jamie, did a lot of offensive digging in front of the Port Elgin net. Port Elgin tied up the game before the end of the first period, but again John Babcock was "hot" in net and the players were making the Port Elgin goalie work for his pay for our chances looked good. In the second period, with only three minutes left to go, Todd Parry of the Techstars outwitted the Port Elgin goalie when he made his move to the right but shot at the top left hand of the net. Matt Philips picked up the assist after he caught Todd with a solid pass to score the goal. Port Perry was able to tie Port Elgin up for the rest of the period and keep the lead going into the third period. However, when Port Elgin came into the third period whatever their coaches said to them during the break seemed to do the trick as they were all over our boys and it didn't take long before they had scored three goals to stretch their lead to 4-2. No matter what our boys did, they could not change the outcome of this game. The boys, parents and coach- es would like to take this oppor- tunity to say, first of all to our sponsor Port Perry Techstar, we are very grateful to you for providing the sponsorship nec- essary for this team to play hockey. To the players, thanks for giving us such enjoyment this year. This was a great group of kids who enjoyed play- ing good clean hockey and gave it their very hest to reach the All Ontario finals. To the coach- ing staff of Dave Jamieson, Dave Bentley, Duncan Fergu- son and Frank Baxter, thanks for your hard work, giving up your time and putting in your efforts to have brought these boys to a level that most of them have never achieved in hockey before. The boys, coaching staff and parents are grateful to San- dra Trick for providing the boys with all the special things throughout the season, the oranges, the Halloween 'g00d- ies, her home for the Christmas party and many other niceties too numerous to mention. Thanks also to Sharon Hall, John Philips and Linda Parry for doing our team write-ups each week and to all the par- ents who worked on the gate or sold Nevada tickets throughout the year. This was an enjoyable year of hockey for all concerned but what made it that way was because everyone put in their effort.
