8a- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, March 29,1994 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" SPORTS Swamp loses final in Uxbridge The Port Perry Swamp Auto Body hockey team of the local Bantam House League trav- elled to Uxbridge on Friday, March 25 to take on Uxbridge PDM Foods for the league championship. The last time these two teams met the game ended in a 2-2 tie but this time a winner would have to be de- clared. The first period was all it was expected to be, fast skating, good plays, good scoring chanc- es and excellent goaltending at both ends of the rink. The first period ended with neither team being able to get on the score- board. The second period was just as fast and furious but it was PDM Foods that struck first as they managed to get two goals and take a commanding lead into the third. Down by a 2-0 count the Swampers fought hard to get back into the game. Finally their hard work payed off as Cory Wiatrzyk fired one home to make it a 2-1 game. Picking up the assists on the goal were Lisa Bonser and Greg Bonser. The Swampers continued to press but to no avail as PDM Foods held on to take the league championship by a 2-1 score. The Uxbridge executive chose Swamper Aaron Levy as 'offen- sive player' of the game and Swamper goaltender Doug Short as 'defensive player' of the game. Both were awarded very nice trophies for their ef- forts in the game. The team was also supplied with pop and doughnuts by the host team in their dressing room following the game. The Swampers have had a very successful season finishing up the regular season with a nine win, six loss and three tie record, three win, one loss, one tie in round-robin playoff, won 'B' championship in Lindsay tournament, 'C' finalist in Port Hope tournament, 'A' finalists in Port Perry tournament and narrowly lost the league cham- pionship. The Swainpers would like to thank all of/their parents, rela- tives and fans that came out game after game to support and cheer them on - thank you! Lions Club wins consolation final The last day of the Atom House League season saw an exciting consolation final be- tween Laurentian and the Li- ons. The Lions jumped out to an early first period lead when Joe Schembri fed a nice pass to Chris Medford who beat a sprawling John Barton for the first goal of the game. After a scoreless second peri- od, Laurentian tied the game at 1-1 when David Halward rifled a shot off the shoulder of Ken Lukas and into the net, assisted by Ryan Woods. Three minutes later, Mike Wadsworth set up Robert Sheehan's marker to give the Lions a 2-1 advantage. Laurentian was not about to roll over and play dead so with just over two minutes to play in regulation time, Gordon Kilner and Mathew Frazer combined to set up a nifty marker by Ryan Kehoe to send the game into overtime. The Lions were not to be de- nied this day as Chris Medford scored at the 3:01 mark of sud- den death overtime to lift the Li- ons to victory. Hard work by Joe Schembri resulted in Medford's goal. N After a long and rewarding season, it's time to hang up the skates, boys. See you all in Sep- tember. rr COURSE APRIL 5" 4-Week Evening Course Tuesday & Thursday 6pm-9:10pm Learn to Drive. .. Petites nip Richmond Hill On Sunday, March 27 the Port Perry Shepstone Petite Bs travelled to Richmond Hill for a warmup game prior to heading into the big finale of the season, the league championship game in Pickering on Wednesday and then the Regional Champion- ships this coming weekend. If this game was gauged as a barometer for the girls readi- ness and desire, it showed that the rockettes are now hungery for the hardware. Just making it to the league final was not only a pleasant surprise, but it also brought the girls a lot clos- er as a team and toughened them up for the challenge that lies ahead. The most impressive part of the team's play lately and in- cluding this 5-2 win over the hill gang, was the balance in their play, developing an aggressive checking and defensive style combined with an improved of- fensive attack. And it sure helps to have the best goalie in the league backing you up between the pipes. That balance starts with our great goaltender, Jill, moves on out to the solid de- fense pairs of Sarah with Shan- non and Kimberley with Heath- er, and blends in with our snipper centers, Stacey and Leanne D., complimented by the winger duos of Nicole with Softball beginning Hopefully with the warmer weather now upon us, and the games at the local rink coming to an end, folks are now turning their attention to the ball dia- monds. To date the registra- tions for the Port Perry and Dis- trict Minor Softball Association have been slow with the total numbers thus far at halfof what last year ended at. During the registration week- end of March 5-6, 190 players signed up, and since that time an additional 70 have followed suit. There is still lots of room for players in all the age catego- ries at this time, and the execu- tive hopes to see at least the numbers that were out in the past season. With the two Provincial Championships that were won last year at the Squirt and Mid- get levels this should generate some more interest and enthu- siasm in the community. As well, over the past three years this area has been blessed with a total of four such winning teams which goes to show the calibre of ball resulting from the local programs. This year the Bantam team will be hosting their Divisional Provincial Championships in August down at the lake front diamonds. Along with this there will be several other inter- esting games and events pre- sented by the association which will be admired by many sports fans, not just those involved in softball. As of last Thursday there is now a late charge associated with the registrations which can still be picked up and com- pleted at Pineridge Sports or by calling Dave Dalton at 985- 3838 for further information. Rhea, Katherine with Alaina and Leanne L. with Sheena. In the Richmond Hill game, there was great goaltending as Jill made several key saves on sure goals including a toe save on a hard low shot that was la- belled for the corner. Our de- fense kept a net over the oppo- nents all game and where-even there was a R. Hill player, you'd find a rockette. Our offense showed their break-out play with five different scorers and four goals scored in that fash- ion. The big gunners for Port were Stacey (break-away), Kathe- rine (break-away), Leanne D. (break-away), Sarah and Nicole (break-away). Assisting on the goals were Nicole, Alaina on a nice feed to Sarah, Katherine with two, Rhea and Kimberley. Hopefully, the solid team play will continue for another week and the confidence and de- sire that goes with it will help in their quest for the gold. What- ever happens, the coaching staff and parents are very proud of their daughters and it should be a great final week for ringette. Stay tuned for the results next week. Printers, Van Camp Novice champions In the five minute sudden death championship game Port Perry Printing defeated Re/ Max by one goal. The first Print- ers goal was scored at 2:47 into the first period by Tyler Wise- flock. Pat Lewis assisted on the play. Stormy Wootton tied the game with 8:47 remaining in the third with help from Clay- ton Gilmore. The Printers went ahead with 7:25 remaining in the third on a goal scored by Pat Lewis on a pass from Greg Hunter and Jonathan Breen. Shortly after Re/Max was again able to tie the game with 5:51 remaining in the third on a goal scored by Tyler Lee with Justin Koury assisting forcing the game into overtime. With just 1:27 into the overtime Der- ek Bond came up with the big one unassisted. Mark Lott was the goaltender for the Printers and Peter Kon- stantinopolous for Re/Max. Van Camp defeated Haugens in the consolation game by two goals. Van Camp's goals were scored by Kevin Lucas with a single and Chris McKitterick with a pair. Joey Lane and Jus- tin Sanders earned the assists. The lone Haugen's goal was scored by Jordan Froats unas- sisted. Between the pipes for Van Camp Contracting was T'yl- er Webb and for Haugen's Scott Honey. Thank you to all the dedicat- ed coaches and assistants for the time and effort they have put into the Novice House League. The players and par- ents couldn't oh had the fun and excitement without you. Also many thanks go to this year's team sponsors.
