"A Famlly Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, March 29,1994 - 9a SrorTs Emiel's, Peewee The Peewee House League came to a close on the weekend and the boys finished it off in style. In the Consolation game, Big V squared off against Emiel's to start the day. Both teams came out flying the first period. At the 7 minute mark of the first period, Big V had a power play chance to take the lead, however, Jon Cham- bersin goal for Emiel's came up with a couple of saves on shots from the point by Adam King- ma. Big V had another power play but were unable to put the puck in the net as the Emiel's penalty killers did a fine job keeping the forwards away from the front of the net. Emiel's forwards were also forechecking well. In the second period, Paul Brain took a nice wrist shot that goaltender Ryan Fraser had to make a good stop on. Emiel's had a power play at- tempt early in the second but Ryan denied them a chance to get on the scoreboard. At the 10:15 mark of the second peri- od, Tim Wray picked up a re- bound from a shot taken by Kam Cooper to get the scoring started for Emiel's. At the 4:19 mark Joey Van Camp scored a goal on a scramble in front of the net with assists going to Mark Sauter and Chad Lance. Big V tried their best to get on the scoreboard with Ben Ste- phenson and Ken Ellis doing some nice passing back and forth trying to set each other up, but luck was not with them. Emiel's tried to add to their score on a power play but Ryan Fraser came up with a big pad save to leave the score 2-0 at the end of two. In the third period, Big V put on the pressure with Ben Ste- phenson, Greg Ranieri and Sean Fletcher all having some good scoring chances but Jon rose to the occasion. Tom Boyd and Mark Delaney played well on defence for Emiel's to stop the Big V team from scoring. Big V had a power play advan- tage but were still unable to put the puck in the net. At the 3:05 mark of the third period, Law- rence Cook's persistence paid off as he banged at the puck three times before it went into the net. The assist went to Tim Wray. Mark Sauter scored with one minute to goin the game on the backhand with the assist going to Chad. Final score of this consolation final 4-0 for Emiel's. In the second game of the day, for the Championship, Scala and Larocque came to play their hearts out. It didn't take long for the Scala boys to get on the scoreboard as Jere- my Hall made a nice pass to Murphy Irvine who scored on a Scala champs hard wrist shot. Scala had a power play opportunity but de- fenceman David Fillion and Adam Brain came up with great efforts to stop the Green Machine. In the next series of plays, Tom Keeble in the net for Larocque made a great pad save on Jamie Page to keep the score at 1-0 at the end of the first. Both goaltenders, Tom Kee- ble and Chris Thompson, were called upon early in the second period to make some great saves. Larocque tied it up at the 9 minute mark on a wrist shot by Jamie Clarke with assists going to Joel Phoenix and Jared Painter. Larocque quickly took the lead as Jamie passed the puck out from the corner to Jon Sanders who one-timed it into the net. Scala, however, was not going to let the lead be a long-lived one as Murphy Ir- vine stole the puck at centre and, with three guys in pursuit, put a backhand over the shoul- der of Tom Keeble. Nice goal, Murph. With less than a min- ute to go in the second period, Larocque claimed back the lead as Troy Hazelden led a nice rush down the ice and made a perfect pass to Brand Monsma who put it past Chris. Score 3-2 for Larocque at the end of two. The third period was a very exciting one as both teams skat- ed hard and were back and forth up the ice with each team getting good scoring chances. Brad Monsma hit the crossbar for the Larocque team and, in the next rush, Todd Mitchell had a terrific scoring chance for Scala but Tommy came up with a big save. At the 11:40 mark of the third, Scala tied it on a backhand goal by Jeremy Pare with the assist going to Tyler Wootten. Larocque tried to score the go-ahead goal as Joel fed a nice pass to Chris Jones who rang one off the goal post. It looked like this game was go- ing into overtime as both goal- ies came up strong for the next few minutes of play, however, with 2:46 to go in the game. Jer- emy Pare picked up his second goal of the game unassisted. In the dying minute of play, Greg Bruton tried to put the icing on the cake but was denied by goaltender Tom Keeble. This game was a very exciting, fast- paced game to watch. Congratulations not only to Emiel's and Scala for their wins today, but to all the boys of the Peewee House ILeague this year. The games were all well- played and everyone gave the extra effort to make their par- ents proud and I'm sure that the coaching staff from each team are just as proud of each and every one of you. Have a great summer.
