"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" Pitch In Week to focus on litter and maintenance By Kelly Lown Port Perry Star Pitch In Week in Scugog Township this year will not only focus on cleaning up the area, but on the caring for previous Pitch In Week activities through a tree maintenance program. Several area groups have al- ready committed to cleaning lit- ter in several Scugog Township areas, but at least two groups of students will focus on maintain- ing past tree planting expedi- tions. Two groups, including an en- vironmental class at Port Perry High School will take part in a tree maintenance program called "mulch blanketing." Ele- mentary school students along with Port Perry High School students will be undertaking the program at Scugog Centre, among other areas, to care for some of the 5,000 seedlings planted during the four previ- BUSINESS SERVICES Computer & Upgrades Local Area Networks (LANS) Consultations, Training, Business Plans, Strategy WILLIAM SANDIFORD (905) 985-1877 SCOTS-IRISH TENOR Ar Evans & Doherty, ECMA champion fiddler Natalie MacMaster & more... This is the 27th year of Pitch In Week in Ontario and the fifth year organized activities have taken place in Scugog Town- ship. During the five years vol- unteers have been digging in to clean up the township, the spring clean up efforts have made quite an impact on the community, according to Ward 2 councillor and Parks and Rec- reation Committee chairman Marilyn Pearce. "Each year we do Pitch In Week therei is less and less litter to pick up," she added. Several schools, service or- ganizations and individuals have already set aside days to clean up specified areas of the township. Residents of Caesarea are un- dertaking a clean up of the ham- lets' parks, downtown area and community hall; the 2nd Port Perry Brownies are planting trees in Rotary Park; the Port Perry Rotary Club is undertak- ing the maintenance of Rotary Park including the litter pick up and gardening chores; the Port Perry Cadet Corps are cleaning the causeway and staff of IGA will be spending a half day cleaning an as of yet undeter- mined area. Area school children are also getting involved as both Epsom and Greenbank Schools will be cleaning up their school yards. Greenbank students will also be undertaking the cleaning of the local cemetery. Port Perry High School has three projects during the week including a production Spiified "Ruckus in the Rainforest" well as clean ups of the coll town streets, Birdseye Centre and Rotary Park, which will be done in conjuction with R.H. Cornish Public School. The township would like to see all areas of the township cov- ered during Pitch In week, and organized groups have been formed from all areas of the township, with the exception of the Island, Nestleton and Blackstock. Any groups or individuals who wish to join in Pitch In Week, or those with suggestions on areas which need cleaning can call Wendy at the township office at 985-7346. The town- ship supplies the garbage bags and garbage pick up. The town- ship can also suggest areas in the township which need clean- ing Sach ear at least 1,000 resi- dents take part in Pitch In Week in Scugog. From the township's perspective there is no greater economic development benefit than having the township clean, Councillor Pearce said. "It goes along way to increase the viability of living here," she said.
