GM March auto sales continue to be strong New vehicle sales by General Motors of Canada continued to be strong in March, with an in- crease of 20 per cent over the same month last year. Building on the momentum from the pre- vious two months, March car sales were up 13 per cent, while truck sales rose by 34 per cent over March 1993. "Customers expect good val- ue, high quality and standard safety features like air bags and ABS brakes in a new vehicle, and they recognize that they get all this and more across our aM lineup," said Tom Mason, GM of Canada's vice-president of mar- keting. "A good deal of the credit for the positive results belongs to our strong dealer network. Over the past several years, they have put emphasis on improv- ing and streamlining their busi- ness, in particular the parts and seryice departments. Custom- ers that chose to maintain older vehicles, are now back in the new car showrooms, and find- ing a very positive purchase ex- perience. And with value pric- ing applicable to 85 per cent of our vehicles, purchasing a new car or truck is virtually hassle free," said Mason. : "For example customers have always known Saturn to be a high quality vehicle, but now they are also realizing how af- fordable it is," Mason said. "The introduction of the $189 Saturn lease has been very successful, and has helped increase cus- tomer traffic in the retailers showrooms, with sales up 43 per cent over March of last year," said Mason. Sales for GM's compact mar- ket segment increased in March. Led by strong sales of the Pontiac Grand Am and Oldsmobile Achieva, this seg- ment recorded a 77 per cent gain over March 1993. GM's midsize vehicles in- creased 25 per cent over March 1994, with the Pontiac Grand Prix and Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme having exceptional sales increases of 149 per cent and 110 per cent respectively. In the critical mid-size van segment, the Chevrolet Lumina and the Pontiac Trans Sport continued to make major gains with sales up 136 per cent over last March, and sales of the Chevrolet Astro and GMC Safa- ri mid-size vans increased by 80 per cent.
