Gun control will reduce crime - what a sham. I'm not sure if it's deliberate deceit, or just a lack of knowledge. However, many of our politicians eager to appear to be doing something about crime, while at the same time appeasing the left wing of the media, are calling for a ban on handguns. After all, when you ask the average uninformed person if they wish to ban guns, they of course say yes. They are under the belief that it must be the solution or the politicians wouldn't have suggested it. Nonsense, total nonsense. The men and women who legitimately own handguns are not generally the type who commit crimes. To own a handgun in Canada, one must apply for a Fire Arms Acquisition Certificate (FA.C.). The process includes a written exam and a thorough check into the applicants background. This process can include police visits to the applicants home. To shoot the gun, which can be done only at approved gun ranges, the person must join a gun club. All clubs run safety courses of 8 to 12 weeks. At any time during this course an applicant can be rejected. Having passed all the above inspections and safety tests, the handgun owner is not free to carry the gun with them or take it wherever they like. There are strict rules on the transport of handguns. The guns may only be taken directly to an approved gun range and back home. Guns in transit must have trigger locks, be in a locked gun bag or case, separate from ammunition in the trunk of the car. To take the gun anywhere else, ie: for service, the gun owner must get a special one time permit from the police fire arms officer. Every time a gun owner buys a new gun, it must be registered and a new updated background check of the applicant is done by the police fire arms officer. Once the gun is home, there are strict gun storage rules. The guns must be kept in a safe and secure gun safe or lockup, separate from ammunition. With the most recent laws, the government (police) has the right to inspect such storage facilities. Now then, do the people who go through all this sound like the types who commit gun related crimes? | think not. The criminals do not bother with the system, nor can they purchase guns from the stores. Instead they purchase illegal guns smuggled into the country. They side step the entire system and just laugh at politicians who propose gun controls and bans. They will never effect the criminal underworld where the true problems lie. Let's learn from the mistakes of Washington, D.C. and New York City Both have banned handguns and both have terrible crime rates related to illegal guns Let's learn from England and Japan that have virtually banned all guns including rifles and shotguns, and if not fully banned, they have been made almost impossible to get Yet both Countries are struggling with an ever rising tide of criminals using these illegal, banned guns In all cases, the politicians ran the same sham of ineffective gun controls that effected the wrong elements of our society. It was an easy out for them, because to the uninformed, the politicians appeared to be doing something about crime. Now they are struggling with the results of their failure to deal with the criminals. Americas failure to recognize the problem also caused them to not build adequate prison space. Now they have had to adopt a revolving door justice system. The criminals soon learned the politicians were soft on crime, only interested in window dressing. The crime scene went out of control. The average American has woken up and recognized the problem. The politicians still languish in Never-Never Land. Let's not let Canada fall into this trap of false and misleading gun controls. Instead, we must demand that politicians deal with the real problems and get tough on crime. We must have laws that deter criminals from using guns. We need ten year sentences with no early release for anyone who commits a crime with a gun. The ten years in addition to the sentence for the crime committed. In cases that involve illegal or legal immigrants - black, white, yellow or brown. These persons must be deported forever from Canada. A few bad apples who tarnish entire races of decent people must be gotten rid of. Other steps to be taken must deal with the root of crime. A failing justice system with weak sentencing and early releases. A breakdown of the traditional family and values. A lack of authority and discipline in our schools. A loss of ones faith, and the total failure of the Young Offenders Act. Let's address the real problems and stop this ineffective sham of gun control. We must call or write our politicians at all levels of government and demand real action on the real problems. Together dealing in truth, we can save Canada from the problems of those that have been down this road before us. Sincerely, Michael Keegan EASTWAY PROPERTY MANAGEMENT INC.
