A 2,000 seat, seven-days-a- week, Monte Carlo-style Casino and Bingo Hall, supported ap- parently by the provincial and federal governments, and sev- eral semi-retired self-made un- known millionaires, is not wanted or required on Scugog Island. There has been no con- sultation with local tax-paying residents by the board or any level of government, including our local one. This, of course, will be an election issue, at least here on the Island, this fall. In fighting this "pie in the sky" "damn the local residents" issue, we will demand funding from the two senior levels of government, in order to pay le- gal bills and other expenses at- tached to fighting this retro- gressive step. We are also demanding equal time for meet- ings with the federal and pro- vincial ministers who are sup- porting this project with our public funds. This Mississauga Band has only a handful or two of mem- bers. Yet, they receive hundred of thousands of dollars every year from the Public Treasury. Their new heritage seems to be gambling, in its many forms, on Scugog Island. We strongly oppose, and will fight it every step of the way as we see many problems associated with gam- bling.
