"Durham businesses are overlooking millions of dollars in trade opportunities with Pa- cific Rim countries," he said in an interview earlier this year. Mr. Shepherd noted last week the economy is doubling in size every four years and Canadian businesses should be prepared to take advanage of the growth. While in Beijing, the MP will schedule meetings with trade officials and attempt to sell the trade potential of Durham Re- gion. "Durham could benefit in the area of agricultural products," he said. Mr. Shepherd sees Durham's agricultural industry as a tre- mendous market for the coun- try, particularly in the cattle and hog industries. Scugog could play a part in this trade as well. Producers are currently shipping goods to Mexico, the United States, Europe and South America, but he believes it should be expanded to the Far East. At the present time there is approximately $4.5 billion in bi- lateral trade between Canada and China, most of which is wheat sales. Although there will be no rep- resentatives attending the show from the Durham agricul- tural sector, he noted that one firm in Whitby has already be- gun to market in the country, shipping more than $600,000 of agricultural goods overseas. Mr. Shepherd's interest in China was sparked after a meet- ing with Chinese officials in To- ronto earlier this year.
