"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, May 17,1994 - 3a By now you've probably heard that the federal Liberal government (vic- tory cry: "It was us or the Third Reich!)" is into the Ginn so heavily, they can't quite spell the word correctly. Essentially, the Liberals have always seen themselves as fervent nationalists and in fairness they proved this recently when they made the hard decision to cut back on lucra- tive taxes in order that Canadians could pet their heart and lung disease from homegrown nationalists cigar- ettes rather than some untested smuggled product that could be harm- ful to your health. So why Investment Canada would allow the sale of the Canadian compa- ny, Ginn Publishing to U.S. Paramount Communications when there were perfectly good Canadian companies lined up to buy it, is a com- plete mystery to everybody, especially Industry Minister John Manley who in fact, did the deal. In opposition, the Liberals would have called the Conservatives a bunch of spineless, U.S. ass-kissing traitors for selling a Canadian text book com- pany to an American movie conglom- erate. However now that they're in power and they did it -- it's an over- by William Thomas GINN - THEY'VE HAD SO MUCH THEY CAN'T SPILL IT sight. It's just an itsy, bitsy oops! Like the fact the Liberals continue to tax books. When the Conservatives slapped a tax on books (along with anything else that had matter, shape and density) they were described as stealing lunch money from the pockets or knowledge - craving toddlers. Now it's one of those things on the Liberal's Must Do List which they haven't quite gotten around to yet. If the intent is to pave the informa- tion highway with top coat of illitera- cy, keep making it difficult and expen- sive for our young to buy books. In the midst of the Ginn Affair comes the latest national poll showing Prime Minister Jean Chretien and the Liberals to have a 65 per cent appro- val rating by the Canadian public. The best 1s, they're quite proud of this accomplishment. Does anybody else see something wrong with this picture? Folks, I hate to be a killjoy but I firmly believe that in the wake of eight years of Brian Mulroney (tyran- ny set to the tempo of an Irish jig) -- that Prime Minister Manuel Noriega and a cabinet led by Finance Minister Patti Starr would get at least 60 per cent. Discovering that the Liberals are popular is like finding out that the Allied Troops who parachuted into France on D-Day and liberated that country from the Nazis were....welcome. Please, MPs, do not go into a job interview using this kind of survey as a glowing letter of reference. The Liberals are now systematical- ly stonewalling the whole Ginn Affair and they actually sent a secret memo to those parties involved in making sure the truth stays buried, on how to best handle questions on this fiasco. Among other pointers offered to co- conspirators in this cryptic message obtained by The Toronto Star are: ¥'Grind down questioners with facts" *"Avoid a parliamentary investiga- tion of the Ginn issue" *"Be boring and dull, not newsworthy" Nobody knows who wrote the memo but it's widely believed to be the handiwork of Guy Caballero, president of the Liberal's new media consulting firm, SCTV. "Be boring and dull, not newsworthy!?121?" Ladies and gentlemen of The Liberal Party of Canada, this is just hot off the wire -- you are where you are because you're boring and dull and not newsworthy. Focus on this for a moment. As a member of parliament, if you had even one exciting or scintillating aspect in your character you'd be sitting on a bench on the sidelines passing the water bottle to Jag Bhaduria. "Be boring and dull..." Does Alan Clarke, the head of CBC Sports have to send a memo over to Don Cherry telling him to be loud and obnoxious on Hockey Night In Canada"?! Does the Speaker Of The House have to send a message down to Sheila Copps telling her to speak up a little bit?!?! Does Cliff Fletcher have to send a message down to Pat Burns telling him to shout out four-letter words when the cameras in close on him?!?! Does Audry McLaughlin have to send a memo to Bob Rae telling him to do a bunch of goofy things then call a snap election!?!? Does Jean Chretien have to send Marcel Masse a memo telling him he's been working too hard, to take the government jet out for a spin this weekend?! ?! Does Cito have to hand Timlin a bucket of gasoline and tell him to get out there and put out that fire?!?! Please, members of parliament, ignore that memo and just be your- selves. We're Canadians, we can take it. We're masochists, we want it. Signed copies of William Thomas' book "Malcolm and Me" can be mailed direct to you by sending $22 to Malcolm and Me, P.O.
