Some of his fans were dis- gusted both with hie decision and with the coverage by the press. Others were overcome with grief. Some made him into some kind of sick role model and decided to end their lives in the same way. No matter how you look at it, the fact that someone, rock star or not, decided to end their own lives because they had no hope is an incredible trage- dy...especially when some of us held the answer to life's hope- lessness and were too busy Student praises employability workshop To the Editor: I would like to take this op- portunity to tell the community about my experiences at the Employability Skills '94 confer- ence and to thank all those who made it possible. My first experience at the conference was meeting Gordon Paynter, a very funny and popu- lar comedian, who also happens to be blind. Gordon made us laugh with his humor, and in- spired us with his tale of over- coming the one thing that he thought was going to beat him, blindness. After the excellent opening ceremonies with Gordon, the workshop sessions had a lot to live up to - and live up to it the did. My first session was wit Scott Anderson of the Port Perry Star who asked the stu- dents what they wanted and then delivered it. He was a very knowledgeable person on the media industry and I hope to use some of the skills that I learned from him soon. making him into a star to tell him about it. Kurt, I'm sorry. The following is a poem I wrote for Kurt shortly after his death. KURT Here lies a man - alittle boy who never escaped From the loneliness of his youth -or his pain. Here stands a crowd - two thou- sand who chant, "I love you!"- From the grave he screams, "You never loved me, only who I was." He cries in anguish, "If you had loved me, you would have stayed- The most memorable mo- ment in the lunch break was speaker Denise Campbell. She delivered an amazing and moti- vating speech on youth empow- erment. An example of her in- telligence and wit that I won't soon forget is the statement, "...don't wait, take action, know that what you don't do affects your life as much as what you do do." My next workshop session was with Chris Hudson from the Scugog Citizen. He dis- cussed the requirements to en- ter into a career in the media in- dustry and the broadening and fragmentation of this industry. I found his advice and informa- tion invaluable. I am sure this information will be of use to all those who are planning to pur- sue a career in this field. The last workshop session I attended was with K. Freeman from the John Howard Society on interview skills. I learned many new things. I didn't know, for instance, that you should The Port Perry Star 0) 0) 3 (& DA ® DIAN 24 is now carrying Self-Counsel Books & Legal Forms e Start & Run a Profitable Home Business e Start & Run a Profitable Retail Business e The GST Handbook * Basic Accounting for the Small Business e Collect those Debts * Learn to Type Fast and more! * Divorce Guide & Forms Power of Attorney Kits e Wills e Rental Forms e Commercial Leases * Application to Rent Forms plus others! Here stands a man all alone - standing, looking over a grave, He slowly runs his fingers over his nail-scarred palms and whispers, "There was no one to tell you of what I gave- No one to open your eyes and ears So you could see that I stayed So you could hear that I loved you from the beginning of time- And always will." Janna Fletcher send a thank you note after a job interview - what an excellent idea! From Gordon Paynter and Denise Campbell to the work- shop sessions I had a great time and hope everyone who took part enjoyed it as much as I did. I would like to thank all that helped make the conference happen 'and those who took part. Trevor Hayman Thank you To the Editor: On behalf of the Kidney Foun- dation, may I take this opportu- nity in extending my sincere ap- preciation to the volunteers and residents of Scugog Township. Our 'March campaign' was an overwhelming success in Dur- ham Region, raising over $7,000 in Scugog Township and over $100,000in the region. We have so many unsung he- roes in our community, too nu- merous to mention, but one man stands out as being a vital part of our society, keeping alive the values of volunteer- ism. Vallie Lovering is our top volunteer for Durham Region collecting over $1,100 during March for two years in a row. Thank you Vallie for your con- tinued support. Due to every- ones generous support, we have fulfilled once again, our goal to improve the quality of life for Kidney Patients through re- search, education and patient services. Yours truly, Steven Snider, D.V.M., Durham Region Honorary March Campaign Chairperson Save Scugog To the Editor: For your readers' informa- tion, the "Save Scugog Island" committee is organizing rapid- ly It now has a bank account, a edicated up ready to dis- tribute information opposing the proposed gambling casino on the Mississauga Reserve on Scugog Island and shortly, in- formed legal counsel.
