Security-wise, the facility will have its' security component and Chief McCagherty of the Durham Regional Police assures us that his officers will, as usual do their job throughout Durham Region. Market studies show that Bingo players are women of all ages and increasingly, married couples. For Monte Carlo, the majority of players are two or more couples who chose gaming as a weekend outing. We are not going to attract "underworld" characters. This is a myth, and a misleading one at that. Finally, we know that any- thing we do as Native people will have to be done "better than" in order to be accepted. This project has been explained in more detail to local government officials (Municipal, Provincial, Federal) at a meet- ing on the First Nation on the afternoon of Friday, May 27. This letter is an attempt to briefly explain the project and let the public know this is hap- pening now, even though it was mentioned by me through the media almost a year ago. I think I have explained how we have tried to do something that bene- fits all who reside in Scugog Township (i.e. jobs, dollars for the hospital, library, sports and recreation, charitable groups, etc.), but I also wish to convey the fact that First Nations have plans and visions for the future that sometimes are not accept- able to certain neighbours. However, we have the right to do as we see fit on our own terri- tories through consultation with our own membership. This pro- ject was 100 per cent approved by the Mississauga's of Scugog Island First Nation Community. It has also received the complete support of both the Federal and Provincial Governments. We urge you to work with us to make this a successful venture and we acknowledge and appre- ciate the support we have been given not only within Scugog Township, but throughout the Durham Region. Our First Nation Government and staff have worked very hard over the past year in order to improve opportunities for our people. One of these opportuni- ties is to be this beautiful new facility where people can relax and enjoy themselves and where they will want to return for games of chance. See you there! Chief Gary Edgar, B.A., E.D.O. Mississauga"s of Scugog First Nation. PS. There are 14 First Nations in the Province of Ontario cur- rently competing for a Native Casino, similar to the Windsor operation. The Scugog First Nation is NOT on this list. We understand there has been some confusion surrounding this issue. Canoe the Nonquon From page 1 Competitors have already come out of the woodwork issu- ing challenges, including the Business Improvement Area, Scugog Chamber of Commerce and the Kinsmen Club among others. The $25 entry fee, as well as any pledges will be donated to the Scugog Shores Museum Village. The Scugog Cup will be pre- sented to the winning crew, along with a prize for the most unique vessel. In honor of "Ducky's" memory Bill Brock has contributed a cash prize for the person who brings in the most pledges.
