2 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, May 31,1994 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Crime stats down, but not in 26 Division By Kelly Lown Port Perry Star Crime is down across the re- gion during the first three months of 1994, but 26 Division, which includes Scugog Town- ship, is not part of the declining trend as incidents of crime rose to 688 in the first three months of the year compared to 544 in the same time frame last year. Regional statistics show a de- crease in crimes against people, crimes against property and criminal code driving offences. Motor vehicle accidents also de- creased in the region. While crimes against people in 26 Division showed a sub- stantial decrease of 70, crimes against property rose by 114, for an increase of 44 crimes com- binedin the division. Crimes against people saw a decrease during the first three 'Sizzling S months of this year. While there were no reported murders, at- tempted murders or man- slaughter in either of the years, other crimes including assault- ing a police officer and obtruct- ing justice were not reported to local police this year. Other drastic drops in crime charges were sexual assaults which dropped to three, com- pared to 14 last year; 39 as- saults were reported, compared to 56 last year; threatening phone calls, obscene calls and harrassment also all dropped as did offensive weapons charges from 14 charges in 1993 to three in 1994. The only area to see an in- crease was robberies, where it increased to four from the three reported in the first three months oflast year. In all, crimes against people dropped from 134 to 64 so far this year. Crimes against property are also down across the region but 26 division, which takes in Scu- gog, Brock and Uxbridge Town- ships, so far this year is seeing anincrease. In the first three months of this year 524 crimes against property have been reported, up from410last year. While substantial decreases were seen in crimes such as bail violations, break and enter of commercial property, fraud and false pretence, other areas saw large increases. Vehicle thefts top the list as 75 vehicles have been reported stolen in the first three months of the year, up from the previous year's 39. The good side is 43 of these vehicles were recovered, compared to only 19 last year. wimwear Savings Save 30% off on all our swimwear for men, ladies and children! Other increased crime areas included a jump of 11 in break and enters to residences, bring- ing the year's total so far to 76 ; mischief calls rose from 46 to 81; narcotic food and drug crimes from nine to 29; possession of property from 16 to 23 and theft under $1,000 from 104 to 132. Slight increases were seen in disturbance calls and arson, while slight decreases or no change at all were seen in bur- glar tools charges, public mis- chiefand theft over $1,000. Criminal Code driving offenc- es were cut almost in half the first three months of this year dropping from 40 to 22. Al- though an increase was seen in dangerous driving charges and refusing a breath test, charges for failing to remain, impaired driving, driving in excess of .08, and driving while prohibited dropped. Motor vehicle accidents were up across the region, but 26 Di- vision saw a decrease of 23 acci- dents. Fifty-nine people were injured in car accidents in the area in 35 accidents. Three acci- dents were fatal which claimed five lives, the only increase in the statistics. Durham Regional Police have responded to 2,175 calls in the first three months of this year, down slightly from last year's three-month total of 2,189. Torch Run comes through town Friday Durham Police officers will be carrying the torch for some peo- ple close to their heart.
