"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, June 14,1994 - 11 Mississaugas open new community hall By Scott Anderson Port Perry Star A community hall built on a local First Nation is for the en- tire community to use, its ghief says. More than 150 people, includ- ing representatives from all lev- els of government and various native councils, attended the opening and dedication of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation's community hall on Friday. And although it is built on First Nation land, Chief Gary Edgar said the new facility is for the use of all residents in Scu- gog. "The whole community can. use this facility," he said. "We're caring, sharing people." Chief Edgar said a number of groups already take advantage of the hall including a floor hockey league. The complex features a large hall with a capacity of 120 peo- ple, including a kitchen. The building also holds the First Na- tion's administrative offices, a conference room and library. In building the hall and ad- vancing forward with other plans including the construc- tion of a charitable gaming facil- ity, Chief Edgar said the First Nation was progressing. "We are simply exercising our right in moving forward. Change is scary and there is fear in this community. And un- til we get some trust out there, there will be some problems," he said. ' The First Nation has been the centre of controversy for the past month concerningits plans for a charitable gaming facility on its land and Chief Edgar sought to downplay some of the concern in the community. "We won't do anything to hurt this community. We live here too, a few people forget this. Why would we do anything to destroy this." He called on the First Nation and the community to work to- gether to foster some trust on Scugog Island. "There's got to be trust here. Some people don't trust us," he said. "It's frightening when peo- ple are doing things that they haven't done before, particular- ly in this community. But we will work the people." And although he said he is willing to work with the commu- nity, Chief Edgar said he is frus- trated by the recent criticism the First Nation has received concerning its plans. He vowed not to get involved in the name calling which has taken place over the past few weeks. "TI won't go out of my way to feed the ego of some people," he said. "I'm tired of some people criticizing us. I think we've gone out of our way to inform the peo- ple." ~5SAUGAS OF GOOG ISLAND FIRST NATION AY J.
