Figures indicate a total of 45 permits were issued for the month with a value of $2 mil- lion. This is up from the 34 per- mits at a value of $6.1 million for the same period last year. A $5.1-million expansion to Community Memorial Hospital in May, 1993 helped push the figure to an artificial high, dis- torting the final numbers. Leading the strong month was housing starts. A total of 14 permits at a value of $1.6 mil- lion were issued in May, up from the four permits with a value of $540,000 last year. Additions to single family dwellings were also on the in- crease as 15 permits were is- sued at a value of $310,000, up from $207,000. Industrial and Agricultural building was on the rise as three rmits were issued at 3121400, up from the one per- mit at a value of $30,000 for the same period last year. All other segments lagged, however. No commercial permits were taken out in either year, but commercial additions fell sub- stantially as only one permit at a value of $2,000 was issued, down substantially from the three permits at a value of $57,500 for the same period a year earlier. According to the figures, 20 single family dwelling permits were issued at a value of $2.6 million, up from 14 permits at a value $1.9 million. But additions in this category dropped as only 24 permits were issued at a value of $421,100, down from the 28 permits is- sued at a value of $775,800 for the same period a year earlier. Although the number of in- dustrial permits increased to eight from seven the previous year, the value dropped from $460,578 in 1993 to $334,400 in 1994. Additions in this segment fell as well from three permits at a value of $118,000 for the year- to-date in 1993 to $46,000 for two permits in 1994. No commercial permits were issued during the period this year, but one $200,000 permit was issued for the same period last year. Additions in this segment fell substantially as only one permit worth $2,000 was issued as op- posed to seven at a value of 170,5001ast year.
