"A Famlly Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, June 14,1994 - 17 'Regatta committee busy preparing | Albert E Putsey The big news this week is the ball game. I don't know what we have done to the fellow up there but every time we plan a major event it rains. Yard sale rained on and off all day and the ball game it was good until we start- ed to play. However, it was just a shower so we were able to car- ry on. These firefighters must have done a lot of practising since last year as they won over the Police Association 9-5. Re- member last year the police took it 29-7. It did the communi- ty the world of good to see these two groups meet in the competi- tive friendly manner, along with their wives and children or their sweethearts. "Make sure you have another game next year, Albert," they all shouted as they left the park. My special thanks to Wayne Bradt for his excellent umpiring, the two teams and my usual group of helpers with the snack bar and etc. and those who attended. I had a letter from Councillor Marilyn Pearce this week whereupon she extended her sincere thanks on behalf of council for our clean-up efforts here in the village during "Pitch In Week". Remember you fel- lows who forgot to come out, take note our efforts are no- ticed. Thanks for your letter, Marilyn. Went out to shuffleboard Wednesday night and saw the gang and enjoyed myself. They sprang a tournament on us for this Tuesday which meant I'd miss being able to notify you in this column. Tuesday is for the beginners but Wednesday's tournament is for regular players. Get there about 8-8:15 a.m. for coffee and doughnuts and you can play all day and evening. Don't forget the Durham Po- lice Community Day this com- ing Saturday with 22 events for all ages at 610 Rossland Rd., op- posite the court house between Brock and Thickson in Whitby. I must get my wharf in next weekend as the following Saturday is our Cana- da Day fireworks, June 25. Joan and Fran have been busy buy- ing Regatta prizes for the Civic Holiday weekend which comes early this year, at the end of July. Now back to the old battle of basement apartments. The way I see it the local government should oversee this matter. There is more than just fire pre- vention here. Parking is one item which can interfere with snow removal or sweeping, re- gardless what time of the day this is done. This rental agree- ment between tenant and land- lord in some cases helps the eld- erly landlord remain in his home and live with dignity. I know a doctor and his wife who, while going through his period of internship at one of the hospi- tals, was living in a basement. There is a definite price differ- ence between an apartment building and these lodgings. I believe they should be licensed and inspected by the building department for smoke detec- tors, fire resistant materials, plumbing and electrical re- quirements for the added load and have two means of exit. A supplement assessment should be added to make it fair with neighbors who live in a single family residence. This is to com- pensate for extra water, sew- age, refuse collection, school en- rollment. The economics of this in a short period would find its own level. As far as the under- ground economy on these ren- tals, it's long gone due to tax crediton the tenant's tax form. Saying of the week on faith: Faith is not belief without proof, but trust without reservations. by Elton Trueblood Joke of the week: How do wood carvers grow old? Answer: whittle by whittle. We regret to report the pass- ing of Thomas Robins, formerly of Caesarea, husband of the late Gwendolyn. Our sincere sympa- thy is extended to children Mar- garet, Donna, Tom and Garry and his 11 grandchildren and their families. Tom was a work- er in the Regatta for a number of years. Hey, kids, remember this Sunday is Father's Day.
