"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, June 14,1994 - 23 SrorTs Peewee MoJacks defeat Simcoe 12-0 The Port Perry MoJacks Pee- wee boys fastball team had a busy past week. On Tuesday evening Scarborough was our guest from the York Durham League. Chris Jones was the starting pitcher against a very large, powerful Scarborough squad who have yet to be defeat- ed in league play. In four in- nings pitched Chris picked up five strikeouts, gave up six walks and eight hits. Clayton Brown pitched the last inning giving up two base on balls, no hits and striking out one. The defense was not as strong as it has been in other games as they committed three errors. Port Perry's bats were a little more quieter than they usually are as they only picked up four hits in this game. Jon Froats hit a triple, Ryan Hawkins hit a double while Mike Versage and Jeff Ashton each picked up sin- gles. Derek Tindall, Jon, Clay, Scott Jeffrey, Jeff and Ryan McQuade all reached base on walks but we left too many run- ners stranded as the final score was 13-3 for the visitors. There were a couple of defensive high- lights that deserve mention in this game. Mike Versage made a great diving catch at third base on a line drive and Brad Monsma at backcatch made a perfect throw to Jon Froats cov- ering at third to tag a runner outon an attempted steal. On Wednesday night the team travelled to East Gwillim- bury and were able to get the bats going for this one. Jon Froats picked up a single and a double, Reid McTaggart picked up two singles and Darryl Dal- ton picked up two singles to lead the hit parade in this one. Other singles went to Jeff Ashton, Ryan McQuade, Clay Brown, Scott Jeffrey and Chris Jones. Jon Froats started on the mound for this game striking out six, walking six and giving up three hits. Clay pitched the last inning and struck out one and gave up three BB. Final score 17-11 for the ModJacks. On the weekend the boys travelled to Cobourg for their second tournament of the sea- son. Our first game was against the host team and unfortunate- ly the bats fell asleep as we could only pick up three hits off the Cobourg pitcher. Darryl Dalton, Mike Versage and Scott Jeffrey picked up singles. Dar- ryl scored our only run of the game with Scott picking up the RBI. Chris Jones pitched four innings giving up six hits and striking out five. Clay pitched the last inning and gave up two Hits. Defense was strong in this game as the boys made no errors and al- lowed only three runs to cross the plate. Mike Versage played a very strong game at third as he made another line drive catch and threw out a runner on a bunt attempt with a quick throw. Final score 3-1 for Co- bourg. A, Next game of the round robin play was against Richmond Hill whom we had played the previ- ous week in Simcoe. Once again the bats were quiet as we could only muster up three hits in this one. Derek Tindall picked up a triple while Jon Froats and Ryan McQuade each picked up singles. Jon pitched the entire game giving up seven hits, walking two and striking out five. This was an exciting game as Port was down 2-1 going into the sixth inning when Derek hit his triple to put Port out in front and then scored on an infield er- ror to make the game 4-2. However Richmond Hill has last bats and picked up three runs on timely hits and one Port Perry error to end the game at 5-4 for Richmond Hill. Our final game of the day was against Simcoe. The bats woke up for this game, defense was strong and Clayton pitched probably his best game to date. Clay pitched the entire game and gave up only one single and one base on balls while striking out three. Darryl Dalton had a good game at second base as he was involved in a number of put outs at that position including a nice catch right on the bag. Jon Froats led the bats for this one as he had a home run and a triple over the left and centre fielder's heads. Clayton helped his own cause with a double and a single. Other singles went to Ryan Hawkins, Jeff Ashton, Chris Jones, Mike Versage and Reid McTaggart. Final score of the game 12-0 for Port. The boys have no games at home this week so our next home game will be June 21 against Vandorf at 6:30 p.m. Come on out and cheer the boys 7-8 Mites action Leahy Mini Back-Hoe met with Country Style Donuts for an exciting action-packed game. The game ended up tied at 11-11 after Leahy came back 10 runs. The outstanding plays for Leahy were by Chris Jack- son both at bat and in the field, Jake Pilkey and Ian Page. The strong bats of Derek, Kim and Sarah for Country Style made for a great competi- tive game. Angel squads victorious The Port Perry "Scugog An- gels" midgets took on the de- fending Canadian National Midget Champions of last year, "and who have moved up to jun- iors this year" had themselves quite a game on Sunday night winning 2-1 over Oshawa. This was Oshawa Double "BBs" first loss this season in league play. Both these teams played some outstanding defensive ball, as players on each team turned in some gems defensive- ly. It wasn't till the bottom of sixth that the Port Perry ladies broke through with a run, after Laurie Dudgeon tripled, then Sara Cain singled to right bringing home Dudgeon with the first run. Oshawa got the first run of the fifth inning on Becky Moynes walk, stole sec- ond and then scored on Stacie Fertile's single to deep centre. After Port in the sixth it was all tied up 1-1. Oshawa with two singles in the seventh put pres- sure on the Kids but next two batters flyed out to infielders. In the bottom of the seventh Tracy Weightman led off with a triple, and scored on Brooke Wilkerson ground ball to third. Sara Cain and Brooke Wilkin- son had both RBSs. Port Perry "Scugog Angels" 2 Oshawa BB - 1 Sara Cain led the hitting with two singles. Singles went to Brooke Wilkinson, Jennifer Eagen, who pitched an eight hitter against Oshawa, Laurie Dudgeon and Tracy Weightman both with triples that led to runs scored. Well done ladies. These young ladies are in Whitby on Thursday this week and next Sunday to take on the Oshawa Jr. Twos while Whitby Dubi will be in town to play the Inter. Angels. Scugog Angels Win 4-0 The Inter. Scugog "Angels" struck fast in the inning as Sherri Brown singled, stole sec- ond, and then Nancy McConnell went to third, then Cathy Davis walked loading the bases with Crooker up she also drew a base on balls scoring McConnell. Tara Mowden then flied out to centre, Kelly Caldwell ended the inning striking out. Angela Davis held Cobourg to four hits while her teammates played great defensive ball. She also had nine strikeouts along the wayin winning 4-0. In the second Scugog "An- gels" added another run on a walk to Brown, took second on a passed ball, then scored on Nan- cy McConnell's single from third baseline. Nancy then stole second base before Spence end-" ed the inning, this seems to be all the Angels needed to win 4-0 as Kelly Trainer settled down to pitch steady for Cobourg. Gena Spence had a single as did Sheri Brown, ancy McConnell, Mirander Porter, and Angela Davis'bunt single. On Tuesday night the Angels - are in Oshawa against the Oshawa 733s at 9 p.m. This weekend, both the An- gels teams will be in Ancaster to the Greater Ancaster 11th la- dics tournament. But we'll both be back for next week's games. With the Provincial Qualifiers coming up, both the Angels teams are gearing up for these vents. The Durham Ladies Fastball League standings appear in this issue. We are very pleased to thank Trader Sams and Garry's Ser- vice Centre for sponsoring this writeup. > tectum eZ
