Minor hockey association sees new president By Kelly Lown Port Perry Star Bill Van Camp is the new president of the Port Perry Mi- nor Hockey. Corporation. The announcement was made at the association's annual meeting held June 8. Grant Laird, who held the po- sition for the past two seasons, announced earlier in the year he would be stepping down from the position. He will, however, stay active in the role as past president. "I felt it was time to step down. From the start I thought I could take one year to learn the ropes and one year to do it," he said. "Two years is enough for any- one and new ideas and leader- ship never hurt anyone either," he added. While Mr. Laird is stepping down, Mr. Van Camp is looking forward to the challenge. Mr. Van Camp, who was nom- inated for the position, said he accepted because he wanted to give someting to the organiza- tion. "I have gotten a lot out of the gystem. I have two children in the system and I would like to put somethingback," he said. "There are a lot of good people on the board, a lot of good new people and a good core of return- ing people," he said of the associ- ation's board for the coming year. But, he admitted it will be a tough role as the association lost three long-time members, who he termed as "three key members." "It will be tough, but they have laid a good foundation for us to build on," Mr. Van Camp added. He is speaking of Mr. Laird, who Mr. Van Camp reiterated will stay active as past- president, and long-time mem- bers Dave and Wendy Bour- Fe0l1s. "They have laid a great foun- dation and have implemented many programs," Mr. Van Camp said. "Dave and Wendy have both been members for several years and have made many contribu- tions and initiated many things," Mr. Laird said. Founding house league tour- naments, initiating develop- ment programs such as speed skating and referee and goalie clinics and initializing a com- puter system were just three of the many ideas the couple brought to Port Perry minor hockey. Another long-time member of the association, Dave Ballin- gall, also stepped down from his Co] position. Several members of last year's board will be making a re- turn including vice-president of operations Ivan Geer, secre- tary-treasurer Rick Farrington and directors Gord Jones, Jim Duncan, Linda Ashton, Theresa Phillips, John MacMaster, Pe- ter Christie, Steve lee and Diane McCullough. New faces will also grace the director's chairs this year as Doug Danter, Rob Kroonen- berg, Doug Harper, 'ichie Le- Fort, Cathy LeFort, Debbie Tar- botton and Steve Churchill all serve their first terms. One position, the vice presi- dent of development is still va- cant. ven though the executive saw a number of chances, Mr. Van Camp said they would not be making changes within the association just for the sake of change. "It is a really good organiza- tion (the wayitis)," he added. One of Mr. Van Camp's first ventures will be getting more people involved in the associa- tion's running. He feels too many people did too much for too long and he would like to see more volunteers, to make it less of a burden on those on the board. "It will also help to bring these people in and remain for the future." One of the major issues dis- cussed at the meeting was ways to deal with the deficit, as the association ran on a $12,000 deficit last year. The board will be discussing many different fundraising campaigns to bring the num- bers back up. Both Mr. Laird and Mr. Van Camp said they do not want to see a huge increase in registra- tion fees next season and are hopeful the fundraising tasks help, but Mr. Van Camp said it is likely they will see a small in- crease in registration fees. He is looking at ways, howev- er, to cut the costs of the associa- tion, including cutting back on frills, which do not effect the player getting on theice. The deficit is due to a number "of reasons including extended ice time costs with several teams extending their seasons, a drop in gate revenues and a riseininsurancerates. "There are four or five factors (which caused the deficit) but none were controllable," Mr, Van Camp stated. Another area the meeting fo- cused on was registration. Al- though there was only a drop of 20 players, bringing the total registration last season down to 470,1t still concerned the board. "We just hope it is not a con- tinuing trend," Laird said. Aside from running on a defi- cit and a drop in registration, Laird called it a "very successful season overall." Four teams reached the finals of their divi- sions, with two being declared All Ontario champions. > 7-8 Mite action It was a well played game on both sides. Sean Harper with a triple, Andrea Baker picked up some good grounders and Ryan Ram had some good hits for the Variety team. IFor the Power Rangers, Lind sey Anderson was good at bat despite being hit by a pitch. Joshua Maschke made some good plays at first and Kevin Sherren had some good hits. The Variety team won 14-4. Well done both teams.
