PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, June 14,1994 - 3 "A Family Tradition for 128 Years" SCOTT ANDERSON / PORT PERRY STAR After being abandoned for more than three years, a new tenant has been found fer the Johnson Controls building on Regional Road 2. It was announced on Friday that Port Perry Metal Processing would be setting up shop at the 60,000-square foot facility in September. Joining in the announcement are (left) Gord Hawker, general manager, Al Westcott, finan- cial manager, Mayor Howard Hall, Randy McLeod, plant manager, and Economic Commit- tee Chairman Ken Gadsden. Council has second thoughts about community hall at arena By Scott Anderson Port Perry Star With weak community sup- port, Scugog council is having second thoughts concerning an arena addition. The township is proposing the construction of a 10,000- square foot banquet facility at Scugog Arena at a cost of $850,000. Under the federal/provincial infrastructure program, the township would be responsible for one-third of the cost. But the township is experi- encing a $267,000-shortfall to cover the costs of parking and equipment. It has appealed to the community's user groups for help. The funding has slowed to a trickle, however. According to Mayor Howard Hall only $40,000 of the needed money was committed by the groups as of June 13. This apathy has prompted council to take a hard look at the feasibility of such a project. "I don't want to miss the op- portunity to build this thing, but if the support is that weak, maybe we should reconsider it," said Mayor Hall. Although she has heard no negative response, Regional Councillor Yvonne Christie said some groups are playing a wait and see game until other parties commit. The fact there has been few commitments places council in a difficult situation. The coun- cillors have identified a need for the facility, but stipulated the community must buy into the project. Backing down on this would put them in a compromis- ing situation. "I believe this project should be done, but how do we over- come the stigma of proceeding without the approval (from the user groups)," said Ward 1 Councillor Ken Carruthers. Council has set a deadline of two weeks to determine which projects it will apply for under the infrastructure program. Father' an" Come to the fun place to shop - you never know what to expect!
