"I'll run again. I want to com- plete a couple of projects that are haunting the region. They've got to get out of the road," he said. These projects include an on- going lawsuit between the re- gion and the City of Oshawa, the construction of lHighway 407 and the region's garbage 1s- sue. Chairman Herrema, who has been battling a form of blood cancer in recent years, said his decision was prompted by en- couraging news from his doctor. Ie recently learned his can- cerous cells had dropped signifi- cantly and he will not require further treatments for five to six months. "I'm feeling great. I've got pro- jects I'd love to finish," he said. And with this decision made, he has his sights set on a few is- sues of importance during the next term. An ongoing lawsuit between the City of Oshawa and the Re- gion of Durham has strained re- lationshipsin the past year. Late last year, the city an- nounced its intention to sue the region over its one-third owner- ship of the Rossland Road head- quarters. Despite the impending law- suit, Chairman Herrema is con- fident a compromise can be reached and a plan can be hatched to work jointly in build- ing a regional centre in down- town Oshawa. Plans fell through last year for a similar plan. But the chairman said some- thing is needed to spruce up the downtown core as the area "looks like Beirut." Other projects of concern to Chairman Herrema are the con- struction of Highway 407 through Durham, which he would like to see progress quick- ly, and a resolution to the gar- - bage dump issue. The Ontario government in- "tends to build a mega-dump in Whitevale to replace the close to capacity Brock West landfill site. Chairman Herrema has long called for alternatives to the garbage crisis including incin- eration and rail haulage. Speculation that he was not running again ran rampant re- cently after he refused to attend GO Transit meetings. But he said this decision was based on his ineffectiveness on the board. "There's no need to go to these meetings. I'm becoming a rub- ber stamp," he said. "Why would I go to these meetings, I have a busy schedule." Chairman Herrema has occu- pied the seat as regional chair- man since 1980 when he was ap- pointed by council. The chairman is elected by his peers and not by the general publicin an election.
