I did not spend over three years in the RCAF overseas to have someone like you tell me "It's the bottom line; No ifs or buts; Like it or lump it." Have you removed the right to oppose and protest? I think not. At this point let me state that I am strongly opposed to this project regardless of who is pro- moting it, and where the profit is going. I can't think of any en- deavor that would be more det- rimental to the existing condi- tions on the Island. In one letter to the editor it is noted that the First Nations pay municipal taxes. Should brownie points be awarded for this? To the writer, I would like to know: 1. What percent of municipal taxes do non-natives pay on the island? 2. What other taxes do First Nations pay - G.S.T.? P.S.T.? Gasoline, Diesel, Propane or whatever? In closing, I must remark on the letter from a Mr. Cooke (May 30 from Ajax yet) you state and I quote "a few bingo players driving across the Is- land." I would say the above is a deliberate attempt to mislead and an insult to one's intelli- gence. The application is for a gaming 2,000 seat facility, plus a restaurant and living accom- modation. There is a no question in ry mind - it will have a detrimental affect on the value of residential property on the Island. I would ask all residents of Durham to write or phone your M.P. and M.P.P. because you could be next. T. Wilson, Port Perry Sorry for the inconvenience! To the Editor: I have just returned home from work on this very hot day. This day that seemed like it would never end. After waken- ing to the devastating news that a police officer had been killed in the line of duty on the streets of Toronto, I didn't think that the day could get any worse. Today, as a firefighter of 14 years on the Scarborough Fire Department, I realized for the first time what it must be like to be a cop on the streets of Toron- to. To be called dedicated and committed to one's job is an un- derstatement when referring to the police of this city. These men of honor and courage are forced to deal with all levels of society on an equal basis. Their hands are continually being tied behind their backs when having to deal with the sensi- tive minorities and special in- terest groups. Before the blood spilled last night had dried, there were claims of racism being sounded across the city. No matter how hard they try to do a sound job and protect this sleeping giant of law-abiding citizens, they are criticized at every turn. From a firefighter's perspec- tive, I was driving this day to a call. We were dispatched to a very serious accident on the 401 east of McCowan, upon arrival, we found five vehicles, four cars and a transport truck. We ar- rived on the scene about the same time as our rescue truck. We followed procedures and went about our assigned tasks. There were three people trapped in two different vehi- cles. The rescue efforts were de- manding as there was three Tel (905) 985-8435 After December 31, 1994 a $9 95 monthly fee will apply Complete details available in branch And Save Upto *60 With the Laurentian Bank SuperSaver Account, vou get free unlimited deposits, withdrawals, cheques, transfers, and bill payments at your branch or al our automated banking machines. After completing what I thought was a very courageous effort to free the trapped vic- tims by fire and Metro ambu- lance, we were waiting in the 95 degree heat for the police to complete their investigation of the accident scene when on three different occasions ob- scenities were yelled at us, from frustrated motorists who were inconvenienced by the collision. Well, for your information this was the last place in the world I wanted to be. I am sorry that you may have had to sit in your air conditioned car for an hour longer than you had planned as we removed the re- mains of someone's loved one, someone's dad, brother, friend, companion, buddy or neighbor. From what was barely recogniz- able as a car, it was not so much what was said but how it was said. If they had a gun, I would have feared for my life. You know who you are. I can only hope you are never in- volved in such a tragedy as one of these in a lifetime is enough. Tyler S.
