"A Famlly Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, June 28,1994 - 21 Sr wt > PORT PERRY STAR < ORTS Gamblers win in extra innings Over the years, the Green- bank Gamblers have been known as a team that could come from behind and win a game in the late innings. And never more so than this year when the Greenbank club has been winning games regularly in their last at bat or in extrain- nings. The Gamblers did it again last Thursday night in Green- bank Park as they trailed the Oshawa Juniors all the way, only to tie the game in the sev- enth inning and finally win itin the overtime. Oshawa got off to a great start in the first inning as Kevin Gibson opened the game with a double, scored on Mike Ding- man's double and the score went to 3-0 when Phil Yahn ho- mered to deep centre field. Gambler pitcher Jim Chil- vers settled down after the first inning Oshawa outburst and Greenbank started to whittle away at the 3-0 deficit when lead-off batter Steve Durham belted a home run to left field and the score read 3-1 after one inning. In the second inning, Dur- ham again went deep off Oshawa pitcher Hubert Basilio to close the gap to 3-2. The score stayed that way until the bot- tom of the fourth when Brian Till led off the inning with a sin- gle, was sacrificed to second by Mark Goreski, and scored on John Foster's single up the mid- dle and the game was tied at three. Chilvers appeared to have the Oshawa attack under con- trol and had not given up a hit after the first inning, but with two out in the sixth, pitcher Hu- bert Basilio helped his own cause by hitting a long home run to right centre field and Oshawa led by a 4-3 score. Also pictured Scott, an original member, Bob Alexander, Down to their last chance to avold defeat, the Gamblers ral- lied when Steve Durham had his third hit of the game as he singled to centre with one out. Paul Goreski laid down a per- fect sacrifice bunt to move Dur- ham to second and Greg Newell promptly tied the game again with a solid hit to right field. In the extra innings, Jim Chilvers retired the side in the eighth and Trevor Till ended the game abruptly when he con- nected for a giant home run that landed in the tennis courts. The come-from-behind win left the Gamblers with a 10-1 record and still holding a two point advantage for the league lead over the fast charging Oshawa Flying Squirrels who hold down second spot with a 9- 2win-lossrecord. Steve Durham and Greg Ne- well each had three hits for Greenbank, and Jim Chilvers claimed 15 strikeouts. This weekend, July 1, 2, 3, the Gamblers are in Waterloo at the I.C.S. Qualifier Tournament and, as a result, the Gamblers home game in Greenbank Park this Thursday night with the Scarborough Royals has had to be postponed. (This game will probably be played in Green- bank Park on a Sunday after- noon.) Watch this paper for a date and time. At Waterloo this weekend, Greenbank will meet Shedden on Friday morning at 9 a.m. at Hillside Park and tackle Que- bec City on Friday at 3 p.m. Saturday, the Gamblers play the host Waterloo team at 3 p.m., also at Hillside Park. KELLY LOWN/PORT PERRY STAR The Greenbank Cuties took on the Greenbank Gamblers of old on Sunday afternoon at Greenbank Park. The annual event drew a large crowd for the game. Juveniles hang on to win 10-7 over Bowmanville Week ending June 26 This week's sports report for the Juvenile Merchants Fast- ball Team is sponsored by Preci- sion Construction, JBK Indus- tries, Ives Antiques, Van and Truck World. The Juvenile Merchants had a positive week with a win and a tie in the Oshawa and District Men's League play. On Tuesday, Port met Bow- manville who put up surprising power with their snazzy new uniforms, especially Roger McIntosh the shortstop who hit two home runs to drive in all seven runs. The game was 2-0 for the Merchants when McIn- tosh hit his first home run to put Bowmanville ahead 4-2. In the third and the fourth, the Mer- chants were able to cross the plate four times for a comforta- ble 8-4 lead. Again in the fifth, McIntosh hit his second home run to close the gap to an 8-7 score. Fortunately, pitcher Jeff Card hit a home run of his own to score two runs, giving a little breathing room. The final score was 10-7 for the Port Juvenile Merchants. Card pitched the full game with seven strikeouts, four walks, five hits, and al- lowed, believe it or not, only one earned run. It 1s always a crowd pleaser when the two Port teams, the Juvenile Merchants and the Antrim House Seniors meet. Thursday night was one of these games on a beautiful night at the lake with a good supporting crowd for both teams. The first inning was not a typ- ical start for the Merchants when an infield out turned into a comedy of errors, scoring An- trim's first run. The next batter got on with a walk, followed by Pilkey's long fly ball to the fence (with the bat), which was caught by McBride and the Merchants then proceeded to get the next two outs and set- tled down to play a good game. Antrim scored another run in the fourth to go ahead 2-0 but at the top of the fifth, the Mer- chants' bats came alive. McBride on with a walk, and two singles by Laird and Moase loaded the bases. Tim Timms proceeded to hit a two RBI dou- ble and also scored on an RBI double by Cochrane to go ahead 3-2. Antrim tied the score in the fifth and the game remained at 3-3 goinginto overtime. A beautiful pick-up out of the dirt by first baseman Empring- ham got the third out in the bot- tom of the seventh and prevent- ed the runner from scoring. After an inning of overtime, the game remained a 3-3 tie. Chad Venning pitched a strong eight innings with three strikeouts, four walks, three hits, and only one earned run. Hitters for the week: Card - two singles, home run, three RBI; Cochrane - one single, RBI; Empringham - one RBI; Laird - walk, two singles; McBride - two walks, one triple; Moase - one single, triple, two Winchester girls = RBI; Shrigley - single; Smart - three singles, RBI; Timms - two doubles, two RBI; Vander Slagt -double. Future games: Tuesday, June 28 - Merchants vs Oshawa Juveniles - 7 p.m. Durham Fields; Tuesday, July 5 - Bow- manville vs Merchants 8:30 p.m.; Thursday, July 7 - Mer- chants vs Scarborough Royals, double header 7 and 9 p.m. The Junior Elimination Games are being held in Oshawa on July 8, 9, 10 with 37 teams registered. The Mer- chants first game is Friday, July 8 against Fergus on Dia- mond 5 (Woodview). If the Mer- chants win, the next game would be Friday at 9 p.m. at Di- amond 1 (Durham HKields). If game one is a loss, the next game would be Saturday at 8 a.m. on Diamond 6 (McLaugh- lin). There will be some excel- lent fastball played on this weekend, and all ball fans should mark their calendar for a tournament not to be missed. soccer results Winchester Arms girls soccer team travelled to Pickering on June 23 to take on Pickering Ontario Air Systems. This game was the first game after two weeks off due to exams and the Winchester gals looked rather sluggish and found themselves down at half by a score of 2-1. Lisa Bonser scored our only goal in the first half. In the second half, the team seemed to find their running legs that have proved to be suc- cessful. Shaun Gault scored to tie the score at 2-2 early in the second half. Shortly after, Lisa Bonser counted her second of the night to give Port a 3-2 lead. The girls played strong team style soccer for most of the re- mainder of the game. A momen- tary lapse in this team style al- lowed Pickering to tie the game 3-3. The team pulled together and played solidly for the last ten minutes and were rewarded when Shaun Gault got her sec- ond of the game to give Port a' well-deserved come from be- hind victory 4-3. With our regular goalie un- able to play, special mention must go to Kim Sproule, Cate Lewis, Paula Reed and Lacey MacArthur for a super job in' goal as each member played a quarter. Three under 16 girls played up for this game oh, lh help- ful in securing the win. A spe- cial thank you to Kathleen Far-, quharson, Elizabeth Benschop and Sarah McKenzie. Next game is Tuesday, June 28 at the Soccer Field against Ajax.
