Johnston, 19, has been com- peting seriously in the sport since the age of 13, and if things go his way he will be playing it professionally in years to come. Currently he is competing in the qualifying round of the Sun- life Nationals and hopes to qual- ify this weekend. Johnston has anational ranking already. If it were not for the Sunlife Nationals, he may not have re- turned to his Port Perry home this summer, as he was offered teaching opportunities in Cali- fornia, West Virginia, Wiscon- sin and Florida, but he decided to make the trek home for one more summer. During his stay in Florida, which he described as an "in- credible experience," he learned many valuable tips. "Ithought I knew alot before I went down, but I learned a lot, both coaching and training. The experience was incredible," he said. Although he admits the first couple weeks of the training al- most had him packing it in, he stuck withit and is glad he did. Johnston also learned his ten- nis skills were good enough to make him competitive with oth- ers, as he played the pro tour, competing against the top 700 playersin the world, and he said he "had some close matches." When he began teaching in Florida he expected to teach little kids at the acade- my, but instead found himself offering tips to the top players. "The responsibility and re- spect I received was great. I got my own group to coach and I was surprised, yet happy," he said. "I'd like to play (professional- ly),butl could end up as acoach. There are coaching opportu- nites if I don't makeiton the pro tour," he told the Star. Right now Johnston has sev- eral colleges in mind when he takes the plunge next Septem- ber, but he does not know where he will end up. He is eager, how- ever, at the prospect of receiving ascholarship. Until he heads back to Flon- dain September he will be offer- ing tennis lessons and working at the Port Perry IGA, where he says he is "very thankful to Jim Grieve and Bob Parker for tak- ing me back to work where I can make money to go back to Flori- KELLY LOWN/PORT PERRY STAR Adam Johnston, of Port Perry, is making a name for him- self In the tennis world.
