"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, June 28,1994 - 23 SPORTS KELLY LOWN/PORT PERRY STAR The Prince Albert School track and field team had a successful season. Pictured are the students who attended and competed in the Area One Track and Field Meet. Peewee MoJacks in action 'The Peewee ModJacks were host to Vandorf last Tuesday evening. Clayton Brown started on the mound and unfortunate- ly the opposition got his number early, stinging him for six hits in the first two innings of play, to run up a total of eight runs. Jon Froats came on in relief and gave up only one hit, unfor- tunately it was a home run with two men on base who had reached by walks. Jon pitched shutout ball in the last two in- nings. The boys on defence were their usual steady selves as they committed no errors. The bats have been quiet lately and for the first four innings it looked like we were doomed again as we scored three runs on five hits. Going into the fifth inning, we were down 11-3 but these boys never give up and a fifth inning rally of five hits, two walks and an error put the game at a decent score of 11-9. Ryan Moynes led the boys at the plate with a double and two singles, Jon Froats and Mike Versage had two singles each, while Brad Monsma picked up a double and Darryl Dalton and Chris Jones each picked up sin- gles. On the weekend, the boys travelled to Stratford for a tour- nament of 16 teams. On Satur- day, the boys played three games in the rain in a round robin set up and placed third in their division. This put them in the B' side for the Sunday games. The first game of the tourna- ment was against Annan. Chris Jones pitched the entire game giving up four hits, striking out seven and walking only one. Ryan Hawkins and Ryan McQuade, our middle infield- ers, both had great games on de- fence with a couple of nice div- ing catches and very accurate throws. Jeff Ashton picked up a triple in this one with the only other hits going to Jon Froats and Ryan McQuade. Final score 4-0 for Port Perry. The second game of the day was against Sarnia. Jon Froats pitched an entire game and did not give up a hit, however six walks and a couple of mental er- rors on our part gave the game to Sarnia. Jon struck out six men and led the team at the plate. Of the four hits that Port got, Jon had three of them. Ryan Hawkins, who hit the ball well all weekend, picked up the other hit of the game and scored our only run as the boys lost 2-1. The third game of the day was against Fergus. After a trip to the laundromat to dry off the boys' clothes, the game got off to a great start as the boys scored five runsin the first two innings on only two hits and some great base running. The rains started down again and the Fergus team came alive as they picked up 14 hits en route to a 13-5 win. Ryan McQuade picked up a triple, Scott Jeffrey picked up two sin- gles and Brad Monsma picked up a single. Chris Jones took the loss. The weather took a complete turnaround on Sunday and the bats came alive for the first game of the day. The boys picked up 12 hits in the first game against Mitchell which 'was one hit more than they had gotten in three games the day before. Jon Froats pitched this one and gave up four hits, four walks while striking out five. We almost picked up a double play at home plate in this one. A long ball was hit to Scott Jeffrey in centre field who threw the ball in to Ryan at short who re- layed it to Brad at catch to al- most tag both runners trying to cross the plate within two steps of each other. The first guy was safe but the second was out cold. Nice team work, boys. Hitters for this game were Ryan H. with a home run and double, Jon with a triple and double, Scott with a double and single and Derek Tindall with a double. Singles went to Ryan McQuade, Jeff Ashton, Mike Versage, Brad Monsma and Darryl Dal- ton. Final score 9-2. The next game of the day was against Breslau. Chris Jones pitched the entire game to pick up the win. Chris' change-up was working well and he used it to his advantage as he picked up eight Ks. The other team didn't know what was coming at them or when it was coming. Chris al- lowed only three hits in this game. Derek Tindall had one of his best games of the season as Turnto Page 25 KELLY LOWN/PORT PERRY STAR Nine students from Prince Albert Public School competed at the Durham Track and Field Finals.
