"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, June 28,1994 -27 ' SPORTS Cartwright Minor Ball results T-Ball Blackstock Figure Skating Club 23 vs Super Spud 15 High winds and blowing sand played their part as the Figure Skating Club increased their first place lead. The winners were led by Myles Romain with three home runs. Caitlyn Hell- ingman had two home runs and played an excellent game at sec- ond base. Rina Prendergast hit another home run while Phllip Kadowa- ki and Dustin Parker scored three runs each. Blackstock Lioness 23 Analda Garden Centre 23 The re-scheduled game re- sulted in no clear winner as the teams battled to a tie. Perhaps the happiest moment was when Kyle Sobczak returned to play after being hit in the head while playing first base. Home runs a plenty provided lots of excitement. The key round tripper came from Wil- liam Dallas of the Lioness as his three run homer tied the game. Other four baggers were hit by Jeff Campkin, Justin Kennedy and Sean Taylor all for Analda. Other offensive stars includ- ed Nathan Evans with two dou- bles while Sarah Aide and Darc- ee Grove collected a single a piece. Blackstock Lioness 14 Analda Garden Centre 13 High winds and blowing sand made the difference in this real- tively low scoring game. Heather Popowich led the winners with three hits as well as scoring three runs. Sarah Aide and Sarah Oppers had two hits and two runs each. A balanced attack for Analda was led by Justyn Kennedy, Sean Taylor, Erin Lang, Mi- chael Hazeldon and Donald Shaw who all scored two runs each. Tykes Cartwright Youth Council 10vs Mike Baker Auto 4 Doubles by Joey Hill and Nicki Jones proved the differ- ence as the CYC won their sec- ond straight game. Tyler Cyr's excellent play at second base provided the defensive support for the Youth Council. Leading the way for the Road- runners were Caitlyn Levac, Al- lison MacArthur and Kory Bay- er all with hits while Dana Manns played a strong game at catcher. J.C.Flooring Turner's Green Giants Scoring the maximum five runs in the first provided all the runs needed to hand Turner's their first loss and put themin a first place tie with J.C. Floor- ing. Sark Carnaghan led the win- ners with a hot bat that includ- ed a triple and two singled. Car- naghan along with Jamie Newman held the Giants score- less combining for 11 strikeouts during their innings on the mound. Swain's Seeds 18 Lishman's 6 Excellent defense provided the key to victory for Swain's. T.J. Parker led the charge with an excellent catch to end the third inning and snuff out a Lishman rally. The pitchers played a key role as they held Lishman's scoreless over the last two innings. Other game stars for the winners were Kyle Wyatt with a double as well as Craig Joudrey. Game stars for Lishman's were Joel Michel with a double while RBIs came from Michael Van Camp, Kiley Percy and Au- tumn Watson. Mites Blackstock Lions Cubs 18 Ash/Ember Flames 13 The Cubs found the winning formula using an all round hit- ting attack for their first win of the season. Leading the way was Blake Tanner with a home run, Jeff Kraan with a double and RBIs by Melissa Peleikis, Lindsay uhne and Cory Hobbs. The Flames were led by Ste- ven Vine with a home run and two RBIs and Catherine and Alex Dejong hitting in two runs each. MKM Eggbeaters 20 Carpet Warehouse 11 Led by the two hits of Jamie Gimblett the Eggbeaters won their second game in a row. Also leading the way for the winners was Lisa Danilko with a double and some excellent defense by Kristy Brooks. Game stars for Carpet Ware- house were Robert Larmer for his pitching along with Kris " Wilber and Jeff Zeidman for the fine fielding. Martyn Consulting 9 Asselstine's Yamaha 7 In a see-saw game the Con- sulting team took over first place in the Mite division. Mar-- tyn's started fast with five runs in the first. However, not to be overshadowed the Yamaha's scored the maximum six in the second but Martyn's fought back for the victory. Brad Sutcliffe for Martyn's led his team in hitting while Chris Goble and Ryan Nesbitt had three hits each. Leading the defense were Chelsea Ma- teo and Michelle Noseworthy with a fine play at third base. Asselstine's key hits came from Tim Martyn, Jessica McLaughlin and Craig Assel- stine. Craig also contributed with some great pitching. Squirts Nestleton Country Store 19 Antrim House 17 The winners fell behind 6-0 but fought back for the close two run victory. Each team turned a double play. John Vanstrien and Krystal Bartley combined for the Nestleton double play while Amanda Drew made the unassisted double play for the Antrim House. Michelle Blundon continued her strong play by hitting a bas- es loaded triple while Aaron Warren's double knocked in two runs. Alicia Burgess and John Vanstrien had three hits each while Brandi Brooks, Krystal Bartley and Andrew Maschke had two singles each. Amanda Lowe and Kristyn Bronson led Antrim with three singles a piece while Amanda Drew collected two hits. Pineridge Glass Service 14 Cummings Backhoe 13 The win by Pineridge log jammed first place with three teams. John Williams led the winners with two home runs while Stefanie Kingswell and Darryl Keeler had a double each. Defensive stars for Pine- ridge were Susie Gerrow, An- drew Marsh and Stephanie Sut- cliffe. Top game stars for Cum- mings were Christa Lane with a triple while Kristen Cubitz, Tyl- er Lucas and Sara Stapley each caught a fly ball. Sr. Softball Don Frew & Sons 15 Blackstock Hardware 12 The Frew crew continued their winning ways sneaking out a close three run victory. Ryan Peters and Stephanie Shortridge led the winners while the Hardware team were led by Allan Richmond, Jamie Budge and Glen Williams. Alex Upton made some great catches in the field H&M Wright Sox 23 Port Perry IGA 3 No game report submitted. Baseball Causeway Cougars 6 Port Perry IGA 6 Timely defense led the Cou- gars to victory. Joey Derynck and Ryan Woods had two sin- gles each while the fielding du- ties were highlighted by the strong pitching of David Young, John Chradek and Joey De- rynck and the defense of Mike Lang. IGA team stars were Law- rence with three hits while Chad and Joe had two each. Thé bottom of the last inning was not played due to excessive wind and blowing sand. London Life Lazers 13 Wotten Carpentry 12 The Lazers maintained the Cartwright bragging rights with another one run victory. Mike Thompson and Jesse Mul- lins had two hits a piece while Joey Lane chipped in with a sin- gle. Defensive highlights were the play of Evan Jones at first base and the completion of a double play. Garrett Brown had two hits for the Hammerheads while other hits came off the bat of Tim Borody, Johathan Wotten, Tim Jensen and Andrew Hud- son. Mites action On Wednesday, June 22, Tay- lor Ford Mites hosted Stouff- ville in a game that was close until the last inning when Stouffville scored 10 runs to win the game. Port Perry's scoring came from Justin Shinn on a single and Jeff Corbett, B. J. Schaump, Tyler Lee and Jona- than Breen on walks. Terry Daly and Kellen Jackson also picked up walks. B. J. Schaump pitched the first inning and then went on to do a fantastic job of catching for the rest of the game. Caleb At- kins and Justin Vandergaast pitched the remainder of the game. Luke Pilkey and Caleb At- kins both made difficult catch- es. Justin Shinn played a good game at first and Darryl Copit- horn did well at second. For Port Perry's Dave Mer- cer, it was a lucrative weekend on Lake Scugog. Dave and his partner, Nes Daniel of Scarborough, picked up over $2,600 at the two, one- day GM/Mariner Pro Bass Port Perry tournaments this past weekend. The Mercer/Daniel team finished fourth on Satur- day, fifth Sunday. Lakeshore anglers dominat- ed the Port Perry Open. Whit- by's Rocky Crawford, along with partner Henry Szemiot of Bowmanville, took top prize of $5,000 with a weight of 18.15 pounds at Saturday's event. Crawford picked up some extra cash by bringing in the biggest bass of the day: 5.10 lbs. On Sunday, Jason Greentree ~ Z Mercer finishes 4th, 5th and Glen Roy of Oshawa cap- tured first place, and $5,000 with a weight of 19.10 pounds. Greentree and Roy also earned $1,180 on Saturday by placing sixth. The Port Perry Open had a full field: 160 two-man teams. All of the fish caught at this weekend's tournaments were returned to the water via the, Shimano Live Release Boat. On Sunday, over 125 children enjoyed a free fishing event staged by Little League Anglers and its sponsors: Tim Horton's, Chevy Trucks, Mercury Ma- rine, Shimano Canada, Big V Drugs, and Talvest Fund Man- agement. Next action on the GM/ Mariner Pro Bass Trail is the Canadian Open Pro/Am in Kingston, July 1-3. Angels win again The Scugog "Angels' just keep on winning as they downed the Bowmanville Mer- chants. This was a hitter's para- dise a they all took turns at bat. Bowmanville got a run in the first, on a walk and two singles to score the lone run. Cheryl Vaughan proceeded to shut them down, along with Angela Davis who came on in the fifth. The Scugog "Angels" scored one run in the first to tie, then put six across in the second be- fore the eruption. Leading the hitting attack was Gena Spence and Carrie Lanning with five hits each. Then came Nancy McConnell, Cathy Davis and Joyce Parkin- son who had two triples and four RBIs, Cheryl Vaughan had three hits and four RBIs. Kim Stewart, Kelly Caldwell and Stephanie Will all had two hits. Tracy Smith had three singles and had three stolen bases also. Nancy McConnell with six RBIs in this one, Sherri Brown, our race horse, had two homers in the same inning and had five RBIs. The "Angels" won this one very easily on 32 hits. This gives the "Angels" six wins and no losses. They also have five games in hand. Scugog Angels 12-0 Thursday Angela Davis gave us only four hits in winning over Whit- by "Hawks" on Thursday night in Whitby. They held Whitby off the score sheet, as they proceed- ed to score 12 runs over the night. Angela Davis not only pitched but had two hits and two RBIs also, before giving way to Cheryl Vaughan who added a single also. The "Angels" broke through in the second as Carrie Lanning doubled and moved to third on an infield out. Sherri Brown had a bunt single, but the race horse beat it out, as Lanning scored. Tara Mowder then sin- gled, then Angela Davis drove home both girls on a triple, the: | scored on Tracy Smith's single. | Then the race horse took over | | | as she drew a walk, then on An- gela Davis' single and two over- throws, she raced around the bases to score. A walk in the fifth to Nancy McConnell, a sac- rifice and a double by Carrie | Lanning scored McConnell to | make the score 6-0. | They then scored six in the sixth to ice the win 12-0 over Whitby Hawks. Lisa Crooker opened the sixth with a single, a walk to Cheryl Vaughan, a sin- gle by Tracy Smith, an RBI sin- gle by Kim Stewart, and a two RBI single by Cathy Davis, sin- gle by Joyce Parkinson, a scor- ing single by Sherri Brown, be- fore the inning ended. The "Angels" are gearing up for the Ontario Qualifiers in Grafton in two weeks. The Mid- get "Angels" start their Qualifi- ers in Scarborough next week. There are no games next week because of the Fields of Dreams Slo-Pitch Tournament.
