| 20 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, July 12,1994 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice " SPORTS Juvenile Merchants fail to advance Bantam Merchants in Junior Elimination tournament This week's sports report for the Juvenile Merchants Fast- ball team is sponsored by Preci- sion Construction, Edwards Construction, Taylor Fuels and Mike Tobin Photography. This past weekend, the Juve- nile Merchants participated in the Junior Elimination Tourna- ment in Oshawa. This is prob- ably the largest and most im- portant tournament of the year, and even though Port's Juve- niles were one of the youngest teams present, they handled themselves well. Game one on Friday after- noon was against Fergus, and not only was the temperature hot, but the pitching was even hotter. While fans were fanning themselves against the heat, Jeff Card was fanning the oppo- sition with a total of 14 strike- outs and only one walk. The game ended with a 3-1 score, and Port advanced to the next round on the winners'side. In game two against the Oshawa BB Junior team, the Merchants inexperience was - evident. At the end of the fifth inning, the score was still close with Oshawa ahead by four runs. In the sixth and seventh, the experienced Oshawa bat- ting lineup was able to get nine runs across the plate with a fi- nal score of 14-1. Game three on Saturday af- ternoon was against Garson who has been the Merchants' nemesis since winning the All- Ontario Bantam C Champion- ship from Port four years ago. Garson quickly went ahead 3-0 in the first and Port continued header against the strong Scar- borough Royals and played ex- tremely well in the two games, losing by only 4-0 and 4-1. Hitters for the week: Brough - two runs, four singles; Card - run, walk, three singles, home run, two RBI; Cochrane - run, seven singles, double, triple, three RBI; Empringham - two singles; Kay - double, RBI: Laird - walk, single' Linton - single, triple; McLennan - two singles, RBI; McBride - two to threaten by scoring a run in 8 walks; Moase - four singles; the third and in the sixth. Stranded Merchant base run- ners could have tied or won the game, but unfortunately this was not to be. The final score was a 3-2 Garson win, and Mer- chants were eliminated from the tournament. Even though the Port Juveniles gained con- siderable experience, it was still disappointing not to have ad- vanced at least another round. The tournament winner was a strong squad from Stittsville who beat Owen Sound 4-0 in the final championship game. They will now represent Ontario in the Canadian Games. On Thursday, July 14, Port Perry will be hosting a double- header between Sioux City, Iowa and the Toronto Gators. These two games will exhibit two of the top teams and pitch- ers in North America. See the paper for further information. n Saturday, July 16, the Juvenile Merchants will be par- ticipating in the Guelph Junior Mens Tournament. Even though they will be facing older and more experienced teams, Guelph has always been a friendly host, and Port has al- ways done well. On Tuesday, July 19, the Merchants will once again face the Oshawa BB Juniors in a doubleheaders at 7 and 9 p.m. at Durham Fields. On Thursday, July 21, the Merchants will be host to the lo- cal Antrim Eagles at 8:30 p.m. on the south diamond. Rangers win one Way to go Power Rangers. The first victory of the season. The whole team played great, and did an excellent job by play- ing together. For the Durward team, Chris and Mark did some fine hitting, while Matthew had a double play. Great game everybody. Classic Hot Dogs and Ca- nadian Tire. On Monday, July 4 in Rich- mond Hill, The Port Perry Ban- tam Merchants looked to break out of a slump. The diamond was not exactly state of the art, more of a sandlot, but none the less Port opened the flood gates and pounded out 19 hits in a 20- 7 victory. In this game, every player in the Merchant line-up get at least one hit. Highlights came from Brad Morton and Brad Shanley who each had round- trippers. Jeff Clarke and Jason Best swung hot sticks as well as picking up three hits each. With all the offense in this game the pitching performance of Marshall McQuaid could eas- ily have been overlooked. He pitched six solid innings for the win, striking out five and get- ting good defense, including an unassisted double play by Dar- ryl Moase. The following Wednesday Port played host to Thornhill and despite a good effort came up alittle short. Thornhill built an 8-1 lead in the third inning and the game had the makings of a blowout, but the Merchant's showed a lot of heart, rallying for eight of their own in the fourth inning to take a slim one run lead. Sin- gles by Darryl Moase, Brad Morton, Jason Logan, Jeff Clark and Brad Shanley led to the comeback. However a gutsy Thornhill team showed some character of their own as they would come back and win this one 13-10. Then on Saturday, July 9 the Merchants took part in a tour- nament held in Cobourg and it seemed as if they played each game in different gears, like cars (stay with me on this one). In the first game, the boys couldn't quite shift out of park and they allowed six unearned runs in an 8-4 loss to Central Frontenac. However, in the second game vs. Scarborough, they drove themselves to the max gritting out a 7-6 victory. Port played su- perb defense in this game and got offensive sparks from the bottom of the order. Tom Cham- bers and Owen St. John had sin- gles and a run scored each to help out. Carl Phoenix, Ryan Williamson, Brad Morton and Jason Logan all had hits and runs scored as well, to lift the Merchants to a satisfying win in the sweltering heat. Then in the third game against an inferior Markham squad Port built an early lead and then put it on cruise control in a 7-0 victory. Ryan William- son had a "Ruthian" perfor- mance, swatting two home runs to each field. Mike Phoenix and Glen Espie chipped in with sin- gles and Matt Kay and Mar- shall McQuaid dueled for king of the hill as they shared the shutout. Despite their 2-1 record, Port c.uld only manage a second place finish in their divisions. which sent them packing. Port's next home action is Wednesday, July 13 against Pe- terborough.
