"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" Oshawa, Whitby Fair set to begin 126th yr. Agricultural fairs, in the 19th century, were used as meeting places by the rural and urban population; a place where they could show their livestock and produce the business purposes plus enjoy a social event that in- cluded various types of amuse- ments, competitions, and enter- tainment. The Oshawa-Whitby Fair has endeavored to continue this tra- dition into its 126th year. This year the dates are July 21-24, 1994. The fair, located at 5000 Gar- rard Rd. N., just north of Conlin Road in Whitby, originated as the Whitby Agricultural Fair in 1868 and moved to Oshawa's Alexandra Park in 1921 where it enjoyed 52 years of success until forced to move due to the expansion of Oshawa General Hospital in 1974. The fair tem- porarily operated from the Brooklin Fairgrounds during 1977 and then moved to it's present permanent location. The financial burden of reloca- tion to the current site almost put the fair into bankruptcy but the last few years have been kind and the fair is again healthy and getting better as witnessed by the fact that this year will be the biggest yet as far asevents and shows are con- cerned. Saturday and Sunday will fo- cus on the many horse competi- tions featuring the beautiful Arabians and saddle horses in full regalia. Competition is live- ly between the Morgans, Hack- neys, Roadsters, and Draft Po- nys as they compete in various classes for prize money and tro- phies while the Heavy and Com- mercial horse competitions highlight the massive Clydes- dales, Percherons, Belgians, and Shires. The exciting Heavy Horse Pull event on Saturday evening is a must to see. The fair is now part of the Moto-Cross dirt bike circuit with the races being run on Sunday morning followed by Thursday and Saturday's Demo Derby heat winners going for the championship on Sunday afternoon. The midway, free with admission, promises to be bigger and more exciting this year with the addition of more adult rides to compliment the less violent rides for the young- er crowd. The popular Bavarian Garden is open all four days and features Mike Preston's fabu- lous Laser Karaoke on Satur- day evening. In addition the fair is also featuring free oxen rides, radio controlled helicopter dem- onstrations, a large antique buggy and cutter display, mini- ature horses, cattle display, 4-H Club display, concessions, Sat- urday afternoon Mud Bog races, Sunday's pet show and antique/ collectable car show with well over 100 vehicles. The Oshawa-Whitby fair is open Thursday and Friday evenings from 6 p.m. to mid- night, Saturday from 9 a.m. to midnight, and on Sunday from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Admission prices of $7 on Thursday and Friday and $8 on Saturday and Sunday includes all midway rides, attractions, and parking. Kokomo Beach Band returning to Blackstock Scugog residents will be catching a wave later this month. For the second year in a row, the summer sounds of the Koko- mo Beach Band will be heard at the Blackstock Fairgrounds on Saturday, July 30. The band takes the stage at 8 p.m. to present its rendition of the pop- ular Beach Boys music. With the theme of a beach party, the fairgrounds will be transformed into a beach com- plete with truck loads of sand and palm trees. Concert goers will also be en- couraged to dress in proper beach attire and sandals to get in the true spirit. A number of games and com- petitions will be held during the evening including a hula hoop contest, water balloon toss and limbo. With an estimated crowd of 350 to 400 people in attendance last year, organizers are plan- ning for a crowd of 500 this year. A strong demand for tickets has already been seen with tickets just goingon sale. Tickets can be purchased at a number of locations including the Port Perry Star, Blackstock Hardware and Masterson's Country Convenience.
