This past Thursday night, the "An- gels" won their ninth game, on the strong pitching of Cheryl Vaughan who tossed a six- hitter and chipped in with nine strikeouts as well. Cheryl also went three for three at the plate, two singles and a triple. The "Angels" waited till the second inning to start things «ff. Vaughan singled and took third base on Tara Mowder's single. Both players moved up on Angela Berwick's groundout. That set the stage for Carrie Lanning to drive both runners home. She then proceeded to steal two bases to put herselfin scoring position, and on a pass ball crossed the plate. The "Angels" didn't do any more till the top of the fourth in- ning, when Angela Berwick drew a walk. The next two bat- ters struck out, before Tracy Smith singled, followed by home runs by Sherri Brown and Kim Stewart. Then Cheryl Vau- ghan helped her cause with a triple then scored on Tara Mow- der's single to end the inning, leading 8-0. In the fifth, the "Angels" ®tarted off with Angela Ber- wick's single. Carrie Lanning singled her over to third base on an infield single down third base line, with the runner hold- ing. Tracy Smith flied out to right field, allowing Berwick to score and Lanning to move to third. A groundout to second base allowed Lanning to cross the plate. Caldwell then stole third base, then Kim Stewart singled home Kelly Caldwell. Cheryl Vaughan got her second single of the day, before the in- ning ended on Tara Mowder's popup to third. itby finally got on the sco- resheet with two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Sari Rose singled, scored on Terri Mul- len's triple which she tried to score on but was thrown out at the plate, as Caldwell threw a 'perfect strike to Stewart, to gun down Mullen. Karen O'Hara's walk and two singles later, by Jenny Woods and C. Scott, who was credited with the run bat- ted in. The final score 11-2 "An- gels" over Whitby. Big"Angels"Little "Angels" There were "Angels" all over the ball park on Sunday night as the Scugog "Angels" took on their counterparts, the Port Perry "Scugog Angels" midget team in their first of two meet- Yngs this year. "Angels"tie "Angels" Some time or other, the un- foreseen happens at the most inopportune times and Sunday night was one of those times. The Port Perry "Scugog Angels" "the midgets) did what they wanted to do most, show the Scugog "Angels" that they can play good ball and come close to winning. This write-up is brought to you this week by Ajax Jeep Ea- gle, Gary Service Centre, Be- thany, Emmerson Insurance and Kastelic Kounting of Port Perry. This Thursday night at Memorial Park in Stouffville, the Scugog "Angels" will play Team Australia at 7 p.m. while vl Team Canada will take on Team New Zealand who will be the opponent for the "Angels" in Port Perry on Sunday, July 24. The date for the Stouffville game is Thursday, July 21. With the tie on Sunday be- tween the midget "Angels" and the Scugog "Angels", and a win over Oshawa Inter. F.C., the "Angels" have 10 wins and one tie, no losses yet. The Scugog "Angels" take on Oshawa "Double BBs" Jrs. and this could be a humdinger of a game, at Durham College, Wednesday night, July 20, at 8:30 p.m. The Midget "Angels" went right out there Sunday night and put a lot of pressure on the big team as they scored early in the first inning, with Sara Cain getting on with a single, a pass ball moved her up to second, then she proceeded to steal third base and scored on Laurie Dudgeon's ground ball out. Mi- chelle Durkin then walked, stole second and scored on Mi- chelle Scott's fly ball out and poor throwing by the outfield. Tracy Weightman then walked, stole second (these kids came out running). A single by Amber Wood and a throwing er- ror to first allowed Tracy to score. The Scugog "Angels" got two runs back as Tracy Smith sin- led, then Hoi | on Sherri rown's triple, who also scored when Joyce Parkinson singled. The inning ended with a double play. Both teams got nothing in the second. Then the Midget "Angels" got a single by Laurie Dudgeon and a single by Mi- chelle Scott to score a run. Scott was driven home by a double down right field by Amber Wood. This made the score 5-2 at this point. The Scugog "Angels" got one run back, on a double by Cathy Davis in left centre who then scored on Angela Davis' single. With the score 5-4 at this point, the Midget "Angels", with Lau- rie Dudgeon's triple to deep right field put her in scoring po- sition for Michelle Scott who promptly drove in her third run of the game. The Scugog "Angels", with their backs to the lake, came out swinging. Nancy McConnell singled but was forced out at third on Joyce Parkinson's sin- gle to right field. Cathy Davis then singled to left centre and: advanced to second on a pass ball. Tara Mowder then singled down the third base line scoring a run. Kim Stewart followed up with a single to left field to score a run, before the inning ended with the bases loaded, on a fly ball to centre field. The final score Port Perry Midget "An- gels" 6 Scugog "Angels" 6. "Angels" Win Second The Scugog "Angels" won the second game of the doublehead- er against Oshawa Inter. F.C. 5- 3, to pick up three points in the standings. Oshawa picked up only one run in the first 14 batters to the plate by the fourth inning. The Scugog "Angels", who have to turn their game up a notch be- fore they take on Team Austra- lia or Team New Zealand, first have to contend with Oshawa Double BBs. On Wednesday night in Oshawa, they got things underway in the first with Sherri Brown's bunt sin- gle, then a double by Nancy McConnell to score Sherri. Joyce Parkinson hit into a ground ball out but allowed McConnell to score. The "An- gels" added two more in the. third on Cheryl Vaughan's sin- gle, a stolen base (wow), then a single by Nancy McConnell to score Vaughan. Then Joyce Par- kinson doubled to right centre to score McConnell. Oshawa scored in the top of the fourth, on a walk to Julie El- liott who scored on an overthow - and an error to Sherri Brown. Sandy Bronson drew a walk, as did Sandy Flack, with Bron- son scoring on Connie Brown's single to left field. The score is 5- 3 after four innings of play. Oshawa added one more in the sixth, on two singles and a walk. Debbie Burns knocked in the last Oshawa run. The final score 5-3 Scugog. A real team effort On July 12 the Arms played Whitby Pumasin a real exciting game at the soccer fields. Due to holidays our defensive core was down to two and several for- wards tried their hand at play- ing defence. Taking the for- wards back to defence weakened the attack up front slightly but in the end the team pulled together for a well de- served 4-3 victory. Scoring for the Arms were Kim Sproule, Shaun Gault, Lisa Bonser and Emily Cosway. Special mention to the defence and Lea-Anne Wakeford in goal for working hard to achieve the win. On Thursday, July 14 the Power Rangers win again Another victory for the Power Rangers. Way to go! Both teams did an excellent Job playing. For the Power Rangers, Bai- ley Evans, Joshua Maschke and Mathew Whalen made some gals were back at the Boccer fields to play Whitby Optimist Club. These two teams put on a fine display on soccer and it wasn't until late in the second half that the arms were able to score their third goal of the night to take the win by a 3-2 score. Every player turned in a super game in this win. Scoring were Lisa Bonser with two and Shaun Gault with one. Under 15 call ups Jennifer Smith, Christine Cambers and Bonnie" Norton filled in on defence and spot duty on forward to help se- cure the win. Next game July 21 at Miles Parkin Ajax at 7 p.m. good double plays. For the Chisler's team, David Briley and Mike Peterson had some great catches while Remy McCoy played a solid game in the outfield. Power Rangers 24 Chislers 7 Great game, everybody. Toronto's Molson Indy is one of this country's premier racing weekends but the 1994 event was not a great one for Canada's homegrown drivers. Mississauga's Ron Fellows started Saturday's Trans-Am race on the front row and took the point from pole sitter Tommy Ken- dal on the 15th lap. After building up a comfortable lead, Fel- lows was involved in a turn five incident while t ing to pass backmarker Jon Gooding. Fellows was able to continue but fin- ished 16th, four laps back of the eventual race winner Kendal. Scott Purett strengthened his season points lead by finishin second and Fellow's Ford teammate Dorsey Schroeder rounde out the top three. Vancouver's "wonderkid" Greg Moore put his Buick Wildcat on the pole for the Indy Lights feature and was literally racing away from the rest of the field when the 50 mile guarantee on his brakes expired with 25 miles left to run. The resulting two spins relegated Moore to 12th place at the checkered flag. Claiming the victory was defending series champion, Steve Rob- ertson. Former Canadian Formula Atlantic champ Patrick Car- par jer of Jolliette, Quebec was eliminated in a second lap crash. The Motomaster Ralt of Toronto's David Empringham took the green flag for the Formula Atlantic race from pole position and David held top spot for a total of...three turns. Texan Greg Ray made a kamikaze inside move at the end of the Lakeshore straightaway forcing "Emp" into the runoff area. By the time both drivers had their cars facing the proper direction, they were at the end of the 14 car field but in the "drive of the day", Empringham fought his way up, passing all competitors but one, race winner and current points leader, Richie Hearn. Ohio's Colin Trueman claimed the final podium position while the only other Canadian in the field, B.C.'s Frank Allers fin- ished fifth. Which brings us to the main event, the Molson Indy. Robby Gordon, the brash Californian claimed his first ever In- dycar pole position with a new track record speed of over 110 miles per hour. Nigel Mansell started beside Gordon on the front row ahead of the Penske squadron of Unser Jr., Fittipaldi and top Canadian qualifier, Paul Tracy. Four other Canucks made the grid with Jacques Villeneuve 15th, Goodyear 18th, Claude Bourmonnais in only his second Indy start 26th and Ross Bentley in 30th place. Gordon took advantage of his front row position and shot into the lead at the green flag. An exploding tire on lap 13 effectively slowed Gordon, leaving Mansell to take the point. Fifteen laps later Mansell suffered a similar tire failure allowing a charging Michael Andretti to grab the top spot. Although a disastrous pit stop and a miscue by the pace car hampered Michael's progress, he hungon to claim his second win of the year, his fourth victory in Toronto and his 29th career checkered flag. "Engineer Mo Nunn joined our team last weekend and he's helped already," said the beaming race winner. "We tested at Mid-Ohio last week and really made some gains and I think we're starting to close the gap on the Penskes." Bobby Rahal in the MGD Lola Honda claimed a season high second place finish thanks in part to the third place man, Emer- son Fittipaldi. : Emmo explains, "Over my radio the crew told me to adjust the engine's fuel mixture but as I reached for the dial, the car hit a bump and my hand hit the ignition switch and shut the engine off. It took a few seconds before I realized that the switch was in the wrong position and by the time I got everything running, Bobby was able to pass me." N With this explanation out of the way, Brazilian Fittipaldi then asked to be excused so he could watch the final World Cup soccer game. Mario Andretti celebrated his "Arrivederci Mario" tour with a fourth place finish and Paul Tracy, who was involved in a first lap accident and had to stop to replace a bent steering arm, stormed through the field to earn fifth spot. Velleneuve and Goodyear finished 9th and 10th respectively with Ross Bentley crossing the line in 19th place. Bourbonnais retired with mechanical problems. One pleasant diversion at the Molson Indy is to sit near the motorsport journalists and listen in on the current crop of ru- mors. Believe me, the "silly season" is in fine early season form. Fact: Mario Andretti is retiring from Indy car racing this year. Rumor: Michael Andretti will leave Ganassi Racing to replace his dad at NewmanHaas Racing. (sounds mein... | Fact: (Maybe). Nigel Mansell will return to Frank William's Formula One team next year (definite maybe). Rumor: Paul Tracy, reportedly on the outs at Penske, will re- place Nigel. (Hmm). Fact: Scott Goodyear is leaving Kenny Bernstein's team as of December 1. Rumor: Scott will take the Budweiser sponsorship money and... a)Return to Derrick Walker's team. b) Move to Ganassi Racing to replace Michael. c¢)Move to Forsyth-Green kin and Join Jacques Villeneuve. d)None of the above (Budweiser may just keep their money) Rumor: Jacques Villeneuve will join the Ferrari Formula One team in 1996 (like father, like son). Rumor: Roger Penske will move to the Formula One scene in 1996 with a Penske-designed chassis, a Mercedes engine and Al Unser Jr. and Paul Tracy as drivers. (WHAT?!!!) Just remember, these are only rumors, but if any of these sto- ries come true, you heard it here first, From Corner Five.
