Tractor safety IS In your hands It is important to recognize a farm tractor as nothing more than an inanimate source of power. A machine can only cause injury or death when that power is, manipulated by a hu- man operator. It follows that safe tractor use is a function of operator knowledge and skill. Overturns usually result from overator distraction. Chief causes of rollovers include: Driving too fast for condi- tions. Striking surface irregulari- ties, such as rocks, stumps and holes Runninginto ditches. Hitching high for extra trac- tion. Driving on steep slopes. Improper operation of front- end loaders. Large round bales and other overweight loads greatly increase overturn po- tential. Many fatalities are the result of riders falling from moving tractors. Children are often the victims of these gruesome mis- . haps. Riders should never be al- lowed on farm tractors! Entanglement in rotating power-take-off (PTO) shafts is a major cause of tractor-related deaths and serious injuries. In such cases, PTO shields are usually inadequate or non- existent. Other mishaps tractorsinclude: Collisions with motor vehi- cles or roadside objects. Falls while mounting or dis- mounting. involving Running over bystanders. Striking overhead hazards. Being struck by flying ob- jects, broken parts, or hydraulic fluid. . Being crushed when a poorly supported tractor falls during repair work. Cuts, bruises, burns, and other painful injuries associat- ed with maintenance and rou- tine operation. Being overcome by exhaust gases inside closed buildings. Being crushed between a tractor and equipment during hitching or unhitching. Being burned by fires that erupt during refuelling, or as a result of collision or upset. It's up to you Regardless of the hazard, most tractor accidents can be attributed to operator error. Every tractor user should be thoroughly familiar with the particular machine he/she is op- erating, and understand the general principles of tractor safety. Accident prevention starts with knowledge. Tractor opera- tors must Pars an appreciation for the various hazards that may be encountered. They must understand how their machine operates, and know how to Vallance Equipment & Rental Ltd. Skill in tractor operation can only be developed through countless hours behind {2e wheel. However, it is possible for an experienced operator to have a serious accident. Famil- iarity can lead to carelessness, and a seasoned tractor driver may push too hard to beat the weather or the clock. All tractor operators must be alert and de- vote all of their attention to the task at hand. Injuries, deaths caused by falls Slips, trips and .1ills in the farm workplace can result in se- rious injury or death. Following is a brief summary of the major causes of falls, along with point- ers for avoiding such incidents. Misplaced objects Work areas and passageways should be kept clear. Objects should be returned to organized storage areas after use. Chil-: dren, toys and pets are danger- ous additions to farm work are- as. Slippery surfaces Slips and trips on the same level often cause falls into oper- ating machinery, such as eleva- tors, feed grinders, conveyors, etc. Repair flooring that is brok- en or uneven. Cover slick floors with skid-resistant materials or paint. Oil or water spills should be cleaned up immediately. Stairs should be well main- tained and properly lit. Provide sturdy handrails. Power to drive the feedrolls and attachments is supplied through a self-contained hydraulic system - the only design of its kind on the market. The most significant advantage of the hydraulic drive is the ability to infinitley cut the length between 3/16 and 5/8 inch (4.76 to 15.87 mm), without changing sprockets. Cutlength is changed by simply sliding an indicator to a desired position anywhere within the range. This changes the hydraulic flow rate to the feedrolls to either speed them up for long cuts or slow them down for shorter cuts. ROTATING DRIVELINE CONTACT CAN CAUSE DEATH KEEP AWAY!
