"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" e SERRE RRS > Slow start, but election race Is expected to heat up soon By Scott Anderson Port Perry Star With the municipal election only four months away, the slate is wide open. Only two residents have for- mally applied for the fall elec- tion. Two others have declared their intention to run, but have not yet filed the necessary pa- pers. Despite the lack of interest at the present time, many are ex- pecting the race to heat up shortly. "They should start rolling in any time now," said Scugog's Clerk Earl Cuddie. Mr. Cuddie, who has been in- volved in municipal elections throughout his career, said nominees will begin to come for- ward in mid-August. Historical- ly, August and September see the most activity. Mr. Cuddie said many adopt a "wait and see attitude" to test the waters and see who else is considering the various posi- tions. Although the election is No- vember 14, all those interested in running for a position in the fall, must register ahead of time. No candidate can participate in any type of election activities, including fundraising, until they are officially registered. Prospective nominees have until October 14 to file the nec- essary papers. At that point, the candidates must file the names of at least 10 qualified voters in order to be nominated for the election. "Don't wait to the last minute to register," Mr. Cuddie said. Throughout his career as clerk in a number of municipali- ties, Mr. Cuddie has seen many prospective candidates enter the race with misguided notions that municipal politics is an easy life. But this is not the case, he said. "The time demand is phenom- enal," he said. "Most people don't understand what is ex- pected. The work load for a ward: councillor and school board trustee includes approximately two meetings a month, and a number of board and committee meetings. Public appearances at vari- ous local functions as well as the personal contact with the con- stituentsis also expected. 111 ---------------- em mm ------ Shhhhh... I'm a secret Port Perry!
