20 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, July 26,1994 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" SPORTS Squads from Down Under please local ball fans Australia/Canada Go 0-0 This past Sunday afternoon here in Port Perry saw Interna- tional Ladies Senior Fastball come to town. The fans were treated to a couple of interna- tional contests, between Team Canada and Team Australia in game one, and then in game two Australia against New Zealand. Team Canada held off Aus- tralia, who started things off early with a single by Petre «Hayley, who then was advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, but then+the door was shut down. Canada and Australia went three up, three down, un- til Team Canada started things off in the second with a triple, but again the inning came to a halt. Both teams then played some excellent defensive ball, until the bottom of the seventh. 'Team Canada's first batter grounded out to first, with the second batter giving the first baseman some more work with a fly ball to first. Then Sandy Beasley singled to right field, Bradi Chammar- tin came in to run for Sandy, Sherri Hoffman then singled down left field, and that was it as Kelly Kelland struck out to end the game at 0-0 tie. Both these teams turned in some great defensive plays to keep the opposition in check. Because the game ended in a 0- 0 tie, it allowed Canada to get underway to Montreal for some more exhibition games, before they head to Newfoundland for the World Championships. New Zealand 1 Australia 0 New Zealand National team started this game off with a triple by Hinna, who then scored on Upu's single down left field. Clark, on a hit back to the pitcher, threw the runner out at second for the first out. With New Zealand picking up the first run, both teams turned in some great. defensive play to keep the score at 1-0. A Walk to Mowk resulted in two interference plays that turned into a double play, set- ting down New Zealand. After two out, Australia's Sandi McDermid tripled to right cen- tre but was left at third as the inning ended on a ground ball out. Both teams went nowhere for the next two innings until Pita Ellibone tripled to left field. Then on a fielder's choice, the second baseman Hina threw out Ellibone at the plate, then Dewalt grounded out, short to first. A fly ball out to centre field, halted this game as Mother Na- ture turned on all her "fury" (as the Australians put it) and turned the diamond into a sea of water. The Aussies waited around but to naught as the - rain kept up for at least 30 min- utes and then stopped. The ground crew took up the task to get things in order. New Zealand wanted this game bad- ly also and pitched in to help get the diamond in shape. In the past week, they've had five games rained out so they needed this game to get ready A couple of Scugog Angels and New Zealand players got to know each other during Sunday's International ball games at Palmer Park. PETER HVIDSTEN / PORT PERRY STAR It was the game that never happened Sunday night at the lakefront in Port Perry as two onds submerging the infield. Scugog Angles were quad when the heavens opened up, forcing the for the World Championship in Newfoundland. The Scugog "Angels" wanted this game too but Mother Nature saw things differently, she figured the land needed the rain, too. The Scugog "Angels" next game is on Tuesday night in Oshawa against the Inter. F.C. Australian pitcher Jenny Holliday wears a look of deter- mination as she fires one to- ward the plate in action against Team Canada Sunday. Australia 6 Scugog "Angels" 0 The Scugog "Angels" got off on the wrong foot against Aus- tralia as the first batter ho- mered to give the Aussies an early 1-0 lead. Ashley Petne got the Australian National team out front in Stouffville and they never looked back. They added one more in the third, after Ash- ley Petne singled to left, then was sacrificed to third after she stole second base and scored on a pass ball. In the third, Frankie McRae singled to right field and scored on Salty McDonald's single through the infield. On three back-to-back singles by Peta El- libone, Nicole Richardson and Frankie McRae, who drove home the run. They added two more in the seventh, Peta Ellibone's single, Nicole Richardson on a fielder's choice by Frankie McRae. While all this is going on, Jenny Halliday is going along quietly throwing a no-hitter at the Scu- gog "Angels". Jenny struck out 14 battersin her win. "Angels" Win Over "BBs" The Scugog "Angels" defeated the Oshawa Double BBs on . Wednesday night before a good crowd, 4-3. Oshawa Double BBs, in the bottom of the first inning, took an early 3-0 lead. Becky Mo- nynes started it off with a single to left, followed by Patti Cucina- to's single. Then Marci Deser- ing singled, followed by Kari- Ann Westlake's single to give the Double BBs a 3-0 lead. Angela Davis then settled down and shut down the Double BBs the rest of the way. But in the top of the sixth, the "Angels" got on the scoreboard, as Tracy Smith singled to right, then was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Sherri Brown. Nancy McConnell singled as did Lisa Crooker who had an RBI. Then Cathy Davis drove in two runs on a double, then took third on a bad throw.
