Juvenile Merchants report This week's sports report for the Juvenile Merchants fastball team is sponsored by Tri Son Paving, Millwork Home Centre, IGA and Key-Bar Office Equip- ment. Close doesh't count except in horseshoes, they say. The fact that the Port Juveniles are playing good ball and keeping the scores closer as the season progresses is no consolation to this team of winners. It seemed as if there was a final innings hex on the Merchants as they lost three games this week which had been close until the final bats. On Tuesday, July 19, the Merchants travelled to Durham Fields to play a doubleheader against the Oshawa BB Jun- jors. Both games were well- played and the score was close until the strong batting lineup of the Oshawa team gave a final push in the last innings. The fi- nal scores were 6-1 and 6-0 in fa- vor of the BBs. On Thursday, our two friend- ly Port teams met with many hometown fans for each side. This season. the games between the Antrim Eagles and the Mer- chant Juveniles have been ex- citing and close, and this game was no exception. The score was 3-2 for the Eagles in the seventh when they broke out their bats for a final score of 5-2. Home- runs were hit by Thompson and Connors. On Monday night at Durham Fields the Mickey Finns had met the Scarborough Royals with both teams tied for second spot and the Oshawa club scored a come-from-behind vic- tory to gain sole possession of second place. So the game in Greenbank was important to both clubs and the Gamblers shut out Mickey Finns behind the excellent pitching of Jim Chilvers. Steve Crummy took the loss for Oshawa in the 3-0 Greenbank win. Chilvers racked up 13 strike- outs in the game and Crummy claimed eight Gamblers via the strikeout route. Brian Till led Greenbank with a three for three night at the plate and Bob Ferguson and Steve Durham added a pair of safeties each. Other Gambler hits went to Don Beaton, Jim Chilvers, Paul Goreski, Bill Buys and Rod Real. Bill Buys preserved the shut- out for Chilvers with a great diving catch of a line drive blast off the bat of Ted Kosciesca. This week the Gamblers are in Port Perry on Tuesday night for an 8:30 p.m. meeting with the Port Juveniles and meet the Oshawa Flying Squirrels in Greenbank Park on Thursday night at 8:16 p.m. The Gamblers will be home to attend the annual Greenbank Beef Barbecue this Friday night but will leave early Saturday morning to spend the weekend at the Ontario Senior Fastball Elimination Tournament in St. Thomas. Their first game will be against the Ontario I.S.C. Champions Kemptville Thun- der at 2 p.m. Saturday. three with a RBI. MoJacks take tourney This past weekend saw the Peewee Mod acks travel to Niag- ara Falls to participate in an eight-team event. The format consisted of two divisions of four teams with first place going to the "A" Championship and sec- ond to the "B". After going 3-0 in the round robin against King- ston, Richmond Hill and the host Niagara Falls' squad, the lads won the "A" final in a slug- fest over Oshawa. The team was still asleep through the first inning as a couple of missed opportunities resulted in Kingston scoring three. They scratched back through four innings to take a 5-3 lead with a minimal amount of offence. They accumulated six hits, two by Jeff Ashton and a pinch hit double by Clay Brown for a RBI, as well as nice- ly laid down bunt sacrifices by Ryan Moynes and Derek Tin- dall. : One of the smartest plays of the day went to Moynes who sacrificed himself in a rundown between first and second, allow- ing Jon Froats to score. Brown and Froats also had the gloves as they made a nice catch each, as well as Froats applying a tag at second on catcher Jeff Ash- ton's throw. Chris Jones threw the full five innings securing the 5-4 win with six strikeouts, two walks and allowing six hits. In another game that went only five innings due to the time limit, Port defeated league ri- vals Richmond Hill 10-0, also applying the mercy rule. Jon oats went the distance, giv- ing up one hit, one walk and striking out four. With that kind of score, there was an abundance of offence and some great defence. Moynes and Brown went two for three with three RBIs each while Brad Monsma drove in two on his double. Scott Jeffrey laid down the perfect bunt sin- gle up the first base line, his first of two of the day. Walks were earned on the keen eyes of Reid McTaggart, Ryan Haw- kins and Darryl Dalton with the first two scoring. : On the defence, Darryl made a diving catch on a shoestring liner at second while Moynes was busy at third scooping up several grounders which he in turn relayed to Brown. Against the host Falls team, it was another time limit five- inning game with Port coming out on top 10-1. This game was stopped for close to half an hour as the Niagara first baseman was injured and had to be re- moved by ambulance. He did re- turn to the park much later, bruised butokay. Froats went a perfect three for three at the plate, followed by Michael Versage at two for ichael also made a nice defensive play at third to corral a ground ball and throw the runner out at first. Ashton picked up a hit and two Every Wednesday CADMUS COUNTRY CLUB RBIs with Hawkins, Dalton Jones, McTaggart and Tindall also contributing. Jones took to the rubber in the final against Oshawa and earned the victory, It stayed scoreless to the third when each team squeaked out a run as they did again in the fourth. Port went into the bottom of the sixth with a 10-3 lead and Froats was brought in in relief. Jon had a tough go of it through two innings and by the time the seventh was done it was 11-11. The international tie breaker was used in the eighth and Dar- ryl started out at second. Browft earned a walk, and with one out, Ashton launched one off the top of the fence in right centre field to give Port some breath- ing room. Jones came back in to pitch giving up one run and al- lowing the MoJacks a 14-12 vic- tory. Froats went three for five leading the hit parade, followed by Ashton at two for five. Single hits went to Hawkins, Jeffrey, Dalton, Moynes, Brown, Ver- sage and Jones. Tindall also col- lected three hits. McTaggart's fleet feet were inserted as a pinch runner to try and earn a much-needed run early on in the game but he was left strand- "ed. Michael was. his usual steady self at third with an- other fine pickup and throw. This week, the squad travels to Vandorf on Tuesday in game one of their O.A.S.A. elimina- tion round with the return visit in town on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. STRESS [4 : 9 a 16-14 'fun' win Greenbank Amsoil Synthet- ics played Philp Pontiac Buick on July 20. Although Green- bank won the game by default, they loaned some players to Philp, who won the fun game 15-14. Philp had some excellent plays, including super hittin by Shannon arriner | James Currie. Krystal Archi- bala was in top form defensive- y. Greenbank was hot at the bat with two home runs by Tomm Long, a double by Andrew Shad- dock and strong hits by Adam Long. Fine effort teams!
