2 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, July 26,1994 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" VT __ There was a lot of curiosity on Queen Street last week as Bloodknot Production were in town filming a made-for-TV suspense thriller staring Margot Kidder and Patrick Dempsey. "I don't know if it was for oth- er stores, but there was lots of people in town and it was good publicity for the town," he said. As for the production crew, Mr. Koury had nothing but praise for the way they handled his merchandise. "The people involved were very accommodating. They went out of their way to make sure nothing was destroyed in the move." Port Perry Auto Supply, which became "Reaves Auto Supply" for several days, was also used for several scenes. A great deal of the filming at the auto supply store took place yes- terday (Monday), but the store was prepared last week. Although producers of the movie wanted - owner Jim Burghgraef to close down his store for the day, he said he could not allow phone orders and wholesale business to stop for that long. He did, however, realize his off the street business would "drop off" completely for that day, but as long asit caused only a "little agitation" he doesn't mind doingit. According to Mr. Burghgraef, shelving and inventory was moved around to accommodate the set and fluorescent lighting was replaced, with word it would be put back the way it was. Merchants in the direct area of the filming did admit the film- ing was disruptive to sales in their stores, but had nothing but praise for the production crew, calling it a professional operation. John Ross, owner of the Meat- ing Place, was perhaps most af- fected by the filming as the' scenes filmed at Nuts About Chocolate forced crew to com- pletely block off the sidewalk in front of his store. ~ Mr. Ross is quick tosay he has no real complaint, as "in reality. they were very fair with me and handled everything profession- ally," he said. Mr. Ross learned he would be compensated for the interrup- tion of his business. Yee His store and sales were dis- rupted, but when the stars were late for filming and technical difficulties occurred, the pro- ducers had no choice but to re- vamp their schedule, thus af- fecting stores like his even more. "It was a very professional op- eration," he added. Pentland Jewellers sales were definately affected by the commotion, according to man- ager Joanne Nitchie. "It is good for the town and it is nice to see something new happening, but it is not helping business," she said. "I think people were leery of coming downtown when all this is goingon.' As a whole the downtown businesses will see some com- pensation for the disruptions. Mrs. McKinnon said the or-- A Summit Drive woman frightened off would be intrud- ers by slamming her front door. Although she sympathizes with the store owners who were disrupted, she said she hasn't heard many complaints, adding that Festival Days was more of a distraction and drew more com laints. hey are trying to work around us and agreed to no weekend shooting." As for the town benefittin ng she said movies are never real y a benefit, but they do bring some money into the town. She admits it is hard to meas- ure the effect of the distraction, but feelsitis very minimal. The 90-minute film, de- scribed along the lines of the suspense thriller "The Hand That Rocks The Cradle" will be released by Bloodknot Produc- tions Limited in 1996. Thieves scared off heard footsteps on the roof of her home. She slammed the door and saw two men scurry off the roof. The woman found a window on her roof partially ajar later in the morning.
