"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, July 26,1994 - 5 Incumbent trustee Drew will seek a third term By Jeff Mitchell Port Perry Star Incumbent public school board trustee Bobbie Drew has ~announced she'll be seeking an- other term in this fall's munici- pal elections. Mrs. Drew, a Scugog trustee since 1988, said the board and its trustees face a challenging term during which they must strive to continue to provide pro- grams and services while mak- ing due with less money from the province and local taxpay- ers. "I'm a taxpayer too, so I un- derstand there's only so much we can do with the tax dollars we have," she said during an in- terview Sunday. If successful in her bid for a third term as trustee, Mrs. Drew will find herself as the lone representative for the area when a new, paréd-down board begins sitting next fall. That's because one of Scu- gog's trustee positions was elim- inated when the board under- took cost-cutting measures earlier this year, reducing mem- bership from 20to0 15. While she criticized the move when it was implemented this spring, Mrs. Drew is confident now she can shoulder the work- load. She describes herself as a "full-time" trustee, adding she serves. on all four of the Durham board's standing committees, and is currently chair of the ° powerful finance committee. "I consider (being a trustee) my full-time job, and I give it my full-time attention," said Mrs. Drew. Among the accomplishments during the board's last term she said she is proud of is a reduc- tion in the 1994 budget, which came in $12 million below the 1993 level, at $369 million. "When we're serving 800 more students than we did the previous year, it's pretty good to be able to lower our budget," said Mrs. Drew. "There is a lot of negative me- Weekend accidents reported Durhan Region Police were busy this weekend investigat- ing two accidents on local roads. Sunday (July 24) a motorcy- cle was totalled when it slammed into a vehicle on Fra- licks Beach Rd. Police said 18-year-old Brock Smith of Whitby was north- bound on his bike around 3:30 p.m. when he hit a vehicle driv- en by Nellie Darwin, 46, of Fra- licks Beach as it pulled out of Hood Rd. "No serious injuries were re- ported, and police reported no charges laid. On Saturday (July 23), police were called to Island Rd. to in- vestigate a similar collision. Police said a car being driven by Natalie Mahoney, 18, of Sun- derland, pulled out of a drive- way into the path of a north- bound car, driven by b58-year- old Reginald Rideout of Oshawa. There was damage to both ve- hicles, but police report no ma- jorinjuries. A charge of failing to yield to through traffic was laid in con- nection with the accident, police said. A continuing renewal of cur- riculum and the methods in which it is conveyed is essential for a board that's ushering kids into the 21st century, said Mrs. Drew. : "We have to give our students the ability to learn," she said.
