A press conference sch®uled for Wednesday afternoon in Port Perry will reveal details about the pilot program, being launched this summer in Port Perry, Uxbridge and Beaverton. A contractor has been hired and it is hoped more than 400 homeowners will sign up to make the program feasible, said Dianna Mucama, a consultant with the R.B. Anderson Asso- clates consulting group. The residential fixture re- placement program will see, homeowners receive 50 per cent funding from the region for re- placement of their old fixtures and toilets with more efficient models, she said. "They expect within a year this will be paying for itself," sald Ms Mucama. "...In the average household, residents will by the end of the year save the money they've spent." The three communities cho- sen for the pilot project were tar- getted because of their high number of development propo- sals and the presence of munici- pal water systems. Ms Mucama said introduc- tion of efficient water fixtures in existing homes now may pro- long the capacity of water treat- ment facilities in the towns in- volved, freeing up capacity for future development. So far just 60 or so homeown- ers have signed up for the pro- gram, despite advertising un- dertaken by the .region.
