The Port Perry Merchant Bantam Rep fastball club played host to the Fennell's Corners Flyers on Wednesday, July 27 and contin- ued on their winning ways with a 12-2 victory. The Flyers took a first inning two-run lead on the local boys but when the Merchants came to the plate in their half of the inning, it was all business as they exploded for six runs of their own to take a 6-2 lead after one. From here on the Merchant defence did its job shutting down the Flyers the rest of the way. The Merchant infield of Ryan Williamson, Darryl Moase, Jason Logan and Carl Phoenix played their positions flawlessly as they teamed up for a total of 17 outs from a possible 21. Marshal McQuade was on the mound and went the dis- tance, keeping his pitches down to force all the Flyer ground balls. While the defence was doing its job, the offence was also do- ing theirs as they picked up two runs in each of the second, third and sixth innings. Doing the hitting for the Merchants were: Carl Phoenix with an in the park homer, Jeff Clarke with a triple and double, Brad Morton with a double and single, and singles to Darryl Moase, Marc : ---- Bantams continue winning Versage, Ryan Williamson, Doug Short, Jason Logan, Ja- son Best and Marshal McQuade. Special mention goes to Ryan Williamson and Brad Morton who both showed warn- ing track power as they took the Flyers pitcher deep to the fence, almost hitting it out. The win improves the Mer- chants league record to 10-5 as they continue to prepare for their O.A.S.A. playdowns which will be held here in Port Perry on Aug. 20 and 21. The Merchants' next home game will be on Wednesday, Aug. 3 with Richmond Hill com- ing to town, 8:30 p.m. start time. Juvenile Merchants drop close match to Gamblers This week's sports report for the Juvenile Merchants Fast- ball team is sponsored by R.B. Moase, C.A.; Precision Con- struction; JBK Industries and Sutton Group - Glen McCoy. This past week, the Mer- chants played only ope game but it was an exciting match against the Greenbank Gam- blers, their friendly foes from the north. Greenbank quickly went ahead in the first inning with a 1-0 score, and the game remained that way until the fourth when both teams were able to get two runs across the plate for a close score of 3-2. In the fifth, the Merchant's nemesis, Don Beaton, hit a two run home run that left the park as straight as an arrow, no high- er than six feet from the ground. The Merchants threatened in the seventh by closing the gap to a 5-4 score, but unfortunate- ly, two runners were left strand- ed to give Greenbank the win. The game was a good pitching duel between Chad Venning of the Merchants and Mark Gore- ski of the Gamblers. Both teams left 13 runners stranded on the bases to indicate that there was steady defence in a game which could have ended with a wild score. For the Merchants, Empring- 9-10 Mite action On July 27, Greenbank Am- soil Synthetics defeated Gore- ski's Lakeside Recreation in the final inning of an exciting ball game. Goreski's team had many good plays, with special men- tion to Mark Sherriffs and Da- vid Akermanis. Shannon Deer- ing was strong at the pitcher's mound. Greenbank worked hard on defense and had several fine de- fensive plays. Great batting by the squad including Samantha Stevenson and Katelyn Lee with a super three RBI triple by Mindy Thomson. Excellent effort by teams! both ham made a fine catch over the first base fence for a critical out and on several occasions centre fielder McBride's arm kept the runners from advancing into scoring position. Hitters for the week: Brough - run, walk; Card - run, single, double, triple, RBI; Cochrane - run, triple, RBI; Laird - single; Shrigley - run, double; Smart - walk; Vander Slagt - two sin- gles, 2 RBIs.
