2 - PORT PERRY STAR - Wednesday, August 3,1994 "Scugog"s Community Newspaper of Choice" Studies will determine size of hall: consultant By Jeff Mitchell Port Perry Star Extensive studies will deter- mine the size and capacity of a gaming hall planned for Scugog Island, says a consultant. John Chalmers, consultant for the Mississaugas of Scugog Island, said numbers concern- ing square footage and person capacity of the building are not set in stone until environmental and marketing studies are car- ried out. "The size of the facility has yet to be determined," he said during a telephone interview last week. "The issues and concerns with regard to environmental concerns and traffic are being addressed." Mr. Chalmers said water and soil testing on the site of the hall -- plans are to hold bingo and GUARANTEED INVESTMENT CERTIFICATES * ANNUAL RATES - Monte Carlo nights there -- will be carried out soon, with exami- nations of the marketing poten- tial for the hall to follow. That's cold comfort to Carol Anne Fitz-Robb, who moved into a farmhouse on the south side of Chandler Dr. with her husband two years ago. She said the presence of a gaming hall can only taint the pristine atmosphere of life on the Island. "The whole character of the Island will change drastically," she said. "You know how peac- ful and quietitis here? "...We probably would have to move if it goes in across the road here." Fitz-Robb said she'd pre- fer to see a discussion among band leaders and Island resi- dents on alternative uses for the property, with an eye to using it as a progressive and revenue- generating site. "I'm talking about the com- munity at large... a lot of people were upset by it." The production company did compensate individual mer- tion like we've never seen," she warned. Missisauga Chief Gary Edgar was out of town on business last week and couldn't be reached for comment, but Mr. Chalmers pledged an open dialogue with concerned community members on development of plans for the gaming hall. He also pointed to the band's chants for use of their premises, and made donations to the Busi- ness Improvement Area and the township parks committee. Lo- cal BIA president Sharon MacKinnon said most mer- chants were happy with the compensation offered by the film company. "Generally speaking, I don't think it was all that bad," she said, adding, though, "I don't think it's something we should |. actively pursue all the time." 'She said the mayor's idea of setting a fee for filming in town isn't a bad idea, but feels pay- ments ought to be made to those who are directly affected by the disruption. Mayor Hall said he'll bring the issue up at council's next meeting in September -- they're currently taking a summer break from meetings -- to see how his colleagues feel about charging a fee. In the meantime, township staff are checking with other municipalities to see what poli- cies for dealing with location work by film companies are in place. "I'm not sure what the answer is," said the mayor. "Maybe it's a fee, maybe not."
