Last week the Greenbank Gamblers and the Port Perry Antrims were rained out of their Thursday night encounter in Greenbank and in the Tues- day night game in Oshawa, the Gamblers came from behind to slip past the Juniors by a 6-5 score. Jim Chilvers and Mark Gore- ski split the Greenbank pitch- ing chores while Phil Yahn went the distance bn the Oshawa rubber. Oshawa jumped into a 2-0 lead in the second inning on a home run by Hubert Busilio and the lead held until the Gam- blers batted around in the top of the fourth inning. Brian Till led off the inning with a base hit and with one out, Bob Ferguson was safe on an Oshawa error. With the bas- es loaded, John Foster drew a walk to score Greenbank's first run and Don Phinney prompfly - plated two more with a single to left field. Steve Durham drove in another with a solid single and Greenbank led by 4-2. But in the bottom of the fourth, Oshawa rallied for a pair of runs to tie the game at 4- 4, with Scott Rooney getting the key hit. The game was still tied in the seventh, when with two out and Steve Durham and Trevor Till on base, Don Beaton drove them home on a hit to right field and the Gamblers led 6-4. But Oshawa was not finished and Rob Gray homered to nar- row the score to 6-5, but Mark Goreski bore down to retire the last two batters and preserve the win for the Gamblers. This week, the Greenbank club is in Oshawa on Thursday night (Note: game is at Durham Fields this week only, rather than in Greenbank, with game time 8:30 p.m.), to meet the Oshawa Juveniles. =~ =: League playoffs will be un- derway next week so watch this paper for times and places. Angels win, but Midgets beaten Whitby "Dube Dodgers" handed the Port Perry Midget Angels a 3-1 setback. Sara Cain started things off for the "An- gels" with a base on balls, and two stolen bases later scored on Tracy Weightman's groundout. And that's all the scoring the Taylor Ford Mites off to the All Ontario Championships The Taylor Ford Mites put together two good games and eliminated Oakridges two games to none. The first game on Wednesday, Aug. 3 was a fast match, be- ing completed in just over an hour. Port got some help in this game by Oakridges' wild pitching, starting off the third in- ning with four straight walks. Then B.J. Schaump hit a two out double to score all three for a 4-0 lead. The Taylor Ford boys' defence was solid, coming up with the ground ball outs when needed. Oakridges got their only two runs in the fourth, as B.J. Schaump pitched a complete game nine-hitter. The Taylor Ford boys made the most of their seven hits, scoring seven runs. Getting hits for Port were Tyler Lee two, with singles going to B.J. Schaump, Terry Daly, Caleb Atkins and Justin Vandergaast. Having strong games defensively were Caleb Atkins at third, Darryl Copithorn catching, Jon Breen second, Stuart Cochrane first, Justin Shinn shortstop and Justin Vander- gaast in right field. Game two played on Aug. 4 was completely different as the Taylor boys had to hang on to a 15-14 win. The Port bats came out firing with Stuart Cochrane's single followed by B.J. Schaump's home run. Two batters later, Tyler Lee hit a home run. Oakridges got two runs in the bottom of the first. In the second inning, Port scored four more thanks to a two out, bases loaded triple by Tyler Lee. Port got two more runs in the third thanks to a two-run homer by Luke Pilkey, mak- ingit 9-6 after three innings. Port scored two runs in each of the fourth, fifth and sixth in- nings. Oakridges kept picking away at the Taylor Ford boys' lead, making it 15-14 after six innings. In the seventh, Port hit the ball hard but could not add to the lead. In the bottom of the seventh, Oakridge's leadoff batter hit a double, but the Port defence did not break. Stuart Cochrane, who came on to pitch in the sixth, got the next batter at first, moving the runner to third with one out. B.J. Schaump did an excellent job making sure of no passed balls as Stuart struck out the next batter. The final out was a two balls, two strike popup to the pitcher. The Taylor Ford boys got hits from Stuart Cochrane three, B.J. Schaump three, Justin Shinn three, Tyler Lee three, Jeff Corbetl three, Jon Breen two, Caleb Atkins one and Luke Pil- key two. The Taylor Ford boys have come along way in the last three weeks and should put on a good show at the All-Ontario tour- namentin Paris on Aug. 27, 28. Midget Angels could muster. For three innings, the Whitby Dubes had runners on base but couldn't get anybody across the plate until the fourth inning, when they put two hits together for a run, a double by Terri Mul- len, a passed ball, then a single by Andrea Martin allowed the Dukes to tie the game. Then in the sixth, after a hit batter and a single by Terri Mullen, a double by Jenny Wood scored both runs. Jenni- fer Eagan took the loss. The next game for the Midget An- gels is Tuesday night in Oshawa at 9 p.m. at Durham College.
