Michael Brock of Port Perry welcomed to Canada Chris McMillan, returning a favor of sorts; Chris and his family host- ed Mike in Australia several years ago when he took partin a Rotary Club youth exchange program, spending a year away fromhome at age 17. Mike stayed with the McMil- lans at their home in Frank- ston, a suburb of Melbourne, for three months as he toured the country, spending time with three other families along the way. It was an eye-opening ex- perience for the youth, who had never been abroad before. Australia proved to be right choice, said Mike, who remem- bers the hospitality he encoun- tered Down Under. "All my hosts would just wel- come me with open arms," he said. "They're (Aussies) a lot of fun." Since his trip to Australia in 1986, Mike has had the opportu- nity to do more travelling, and reflect on the similarities of the people of Canada and Australia. "Canadians and Australians I've found, all over the world, have a certain bond," he said. They met during a Rotary Club youth exchange. Chris, a past president of his home Rotary Club, stopped by Canada in the midst of a dizzy- ing jaunt around the globe as he works as an entertainer for Club Med Resorts. He attended conventions in the U.S. after celebrating his 25th wedding anniversary in England with his wife, then found himself with some free time. "I thought, well, I'll go up and see Mikey." - While this is Chris' first visit to Canada, the two met up in January, when Mike and a pal travelled to Australia, During an interview last week, both re- flected on the program that brought them together original- Maurice Midgley J] General Delivery o Nothing Too Small - Ice - - Groceries - Fop Anything! "You go over there having lived all your life in one small town," said Mike, now 25 and an engineer working for the federal government. "Youlearnalot." "You live a totally different life with each family." "Also, you come out of it a lot more grown up than when you wentin." Chris, who's been involved with a number of Rotary ex- changes over the years, said the value of the programs -- particu- larly for young people -- is huge. "It's a big world out there," he said. "And sometimes the way they do things out there may be better than the way you're doing it at the moment." 7) ie «® \ in NECN H= SF 985-7863 1AM [01S RISI0]IN] \ Department of Social Services an as] Effective August 15, 1994 the offices of the Department of Social All At Guaranteed Low Prices Services, including Child Care, Family Counselling, Income FAMOUS Support, Services for Seniors and all administrative offices will U N ITE D ?
