Douglas Bird, 35, announced his intention to seek the ) nomination last week. He is the second declared candidate int the race, which insiders say could attract more hopefuls as the date for a nomination meeting nears. Mr. Bird, a lifelong resident of Bowmanville and a supervisor with an area ambulance service, said the present New Democratic Party government at Queen's Park has a skewed vision of provincial management, and hopes a Liberal government will bring about necessary changes. He said he's entering politics now because he's observed for long enough, and wants to make changes. "It's got to the point where I don't like the way things are being run, and you can't change the play from the sidelines... there's a few things I want to see worked on." Mr. Bird's previous exposure to politics has been as a Progressive Conservative supporter, but he's aligned himself with the Liberals now because he finds their philosephies more in keeping with his own. "I have found my leanings and my attitudes have changed over the years in the way I think about things," he said. Mr. Bird is challenging George Khouri, a Newcastle resident with a business in Whitby, who announced his candidacy for the nomination a couple of weeks ago. Insiders say more candidates nay come forward before the nomination meeting, which could take place as early as the fall or next spring. Mike Graham, Superintendent of Education/Plant SEE \L Scugog Couples Celebrate o0th Anniversaries So Joe and Clara Dowson were guests of honor at an Open House at the Scugog Island Hall last Saturday afternoon. The popular couple were married in the parsonage of Port Perry United Church on Aug. 5, 1944 and have resided their entire life on Scugog Island and a brief period in Port Perry. They have one son, Jim of Oshawa and a grandson Jonathan. Friends came from as far away as Cleveland, Ohio to take part in the celebration and dinner in their honor. Biil and Eileen Dalby of Port Perry enjoyed visits from friends and family during an Open House in honor of their 50th Anniversary last Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. Dalby were married on Aug. 5, 1944 in Whitby and have made Port Perry their home for the past four years. They have two children, Richard of Oshawa and Bob of Port Perry, and are proud grand-par PHOTOS BY J. The couple has lived all but 4 years on the Island and have two children, Gary of Port Perry and Carol Armstrong of Oshawa and four grandsons. They were married in the Columbus United Church parsonage on August 5, 1944.
