T_T "A Family Tradition for 128 Years" Long-time resident Grosvenor makes bid for seat in Ward 2 By Jeff Mitchell Port Perry Star _ Controlling taxes and striv- Ing to provide more recreation opportunities for Scugog resi- dents are among the items on the agenda of Jim Grosvenor, Sandidnis for councillor in Ward Mr. Grosvenor, 53, avesident of the area for 20 years, said he has long considered seeking a Pearce is pondering re-election Incumbent Ward 2 Coun- cillor Marilyn Pearce says she is leaning toward seek- ing re-election, but hasn't yet reached a frim decision. Mrs. Pearce, councillor in the ward for six years, said last week she'll make a deci- sion soon on her political fu- turein Scugog. "I'm fairly certain I'll be running for re-election in some capacity," she said. "I'm pretty sure at this point it willbe Ward 2." "But I haven't made a firm decision yet." So far one candidate, Jim Grosvenor, has announced his intention to seek the Ward 2 seat. Candidates have until mid-October to register. JIM GROSVENOR council seat, but didn't have the time. Now that he's retired -- he served as a firefighter in East York for 28 years -- he said he has the time he feels is neces- sary to fully devote himself to the councillor's job. "I see what's going on in there and I think I could do it," he said duringa recent interview. "And I could do an ample job." Among the issues he sees fac- ing the next council will be pro- vision of recreation services for Scugog, a township where many kids and adults are involved i in organized sports. Most particularly, he'd like to see the township council bite the bullet and install a second ice pad at the local arena. Past councils have "studied it to death", he said, noting it's time for action. The Value of Friends "When my younger l rother and father died, I was fortunate to have good friends who were there for me. They took time out of their busy lives to offer their Support. My becoming a funeral director allowed me to give something back to them. It was a way to say 'thank you' for all they had done. Now I'm able to help others in their time of need." Dependable Service to the Community Since 1846 "Their (the user groups) needs are not being met," said Mr. Grosvenor. "There's so little ice, with so many needs." "There might be grants out there" to help fund construc- tion, he added. He'd also like to see the insti- tution of a "wellness program" here aimed at encouraging lo- cals to pursue fitness in as many ways as possible. Group activi- ties with an emphasis on fun could make people get out and take part, he said. "If you make it fun, everybody will doit." Mr. Grosvenor said township taxes can be controlled with a "concerted effort" by the council to keep them in line with the means of local ratepayers. A long-time volunteer who's helped organize many popular sporting and community avents, Mr. Grosvenor said he'd also like to see more community involvement in boosting pro- jects in Scugog. "When I moved here from Scarborough I saw that in this community if something had to be done, everybody would pitch in and do it... many hands make light work." "This is still a grand small town," he added. Mr. Grosvenor will be vyin for the seat currently occupied by Ward 2 Councillor Marilyn Pearce in the November munici- pal election. Mrs. Pearce said last week she is leaning toward running, but hasn't made a move yet. At Wagg Funeral Home we understand that when one of us hurts, we all hurt.
