"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" Membership growing Lawn bowling keeps seniors fit, while seeking fellowship ) Kelly Lown Port Perry Star Lawn Bowling is not just for seniors, but many enjoy it as a way to seek fun and fellowship, while getting some exercise. The Port Perry Lawn Bowling Club saw an increase in mem- bership this year as close to 100 bowlers enjoy the sportlocally. The club was established in 1910, and officially named in 1944, while still located on its original site on Queen Street. The then 39-member club had the green and building con- structed and maintained it through membership. After many successful years on the bowling green the club decided it was time for a move and a new building and greens were constructed on Old Simcoe Road. The club gave up rights to the Queen Street property and with a $23,000 grant from town- ship council, $45,000 from its Queen Street lot, $25, 000 Win- tario grant and a $12,000 Hori- zons grant, among other fund- raising projects, the new site was under construction. , The first executive meeting was held in the new clubhouse on May 26, 1986 and was offi- cially opened on August 23, 1986. Since that time lights have been installed and sheltered seating was added, making a day of lawn bowling more com- fortable and enjoying. Today 93 members enjoy the sport of lawn bowling. There are activities taking place at the club almost every night of the week. There are league nights on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and tournaments' during the days and weekends for both men, women and mixed teams. The club is always looking for new members and is open to those wishing to try their luck at the sport. The only require- ment is that bowlers wear flat- soled shoes.
