Aug. 9, 1994 will be an eve- ning long remembered by pitch- er Tim Jones of the Canadian Legion Fastball rep team. With a"solid team defensive and of- fensive effort behind him, he re- - corded a "no-hitter" and was just two walks away from a per- fect game. He tossed 12 strike- outs against the Aurora visitors as the team notched a 7-0 win in their last scheduled game of _ their York-Durham League sea- © son. Catcher Matt Skerratt called a good game behind the plate to share in the occasion and also had two hits. Aaron Lycett clubbed a two run homer in the , third inning with Sean Jeffrey aboard on one of his three walks in the game. Sean made two nice catches in centre field to help Tim. Mike Wiseman was on base four times with two hits Squirt pitch es no-hitter and two walks. Mike Koury (at second base) and Matt Breen (at the hot corner) collected hits. Tim helped himself with two hits, one of which was a "slap bunt" that he picked up from the recent Sioux City/Toronto Gators exhibition game. Richard Bryant was robbed of a hit after a hard drive to deep right field and was later on board twice after taking two "hit-by-pitches" for his team. Jeff Kane was rock steady de- fensively at first base. Team veteran Chris Monsma did a stellar job in his coaching debut at first base! Congratulations to the team and to Tim for putting good pitching, good defense and good offense together to close out their play at the lake for this summer! Good luck in your up- coming year end league final tournament. This week's sports report for the Juvenile Merchants Fastball team is sponsored by Ives Antiques, Van & Truck World, Classic Hot Dogs and XL Gas. Threepeat! The Blue Jays tried but couldn't do it. The Merchant Juveniles did it in great style on Sunday afternoon at Durham Fields in Oshawa. This team of talented ball players won the All-Ontario Championship as Midgets in 1992 in New Hamburg, and again in 1993 in Port Perry. 1994 was to have been a year of re- building as the team moved up from Midget competition to Juvenile/Junior competition. Playing this season in the Oshawa Men's League was at times discouraging as the team faced older and more experienced players, but it must have raised the skills of this group of young athletes another notch. They are now the only Port Perry Minor Ball Fastball team to have won the honored All-Ontario Champion- ship three years in a row. : The Port Perry Merchants proceeded through the All-Ontario Juvenile tournament to the championship game without a loss, de- feating Scarborough 7-0, and Wingham 2-1on a seventh inning, two-out home run by Steve Laird and strong pitching in both games by Jeff Card. New Liskeard and the Oshawa "BB" Juveniles were eliminated along the way. In the championship round, the Merchants had to be beaten twice since they were undefeated. They proceeded to lose the first game to Wingham 5- 0, but the Port ball club didn't lose their confi- dence or enthusiasm for a minute. They knew they had one last chance to do the unexpected, and they did it by winning the final game 4-1, anchored by the strong pitching of Chad Ven- ning who introduced in the last inning a sur- prise change-up which he had kept secret all year. The game results of the tournament are as follows: Game one: Wingham 2 - Oshawa 0; Game two: Port Perry 7 - Scarborough 0; Game three: Wingham 7 - New Liskeard 6; Game four: Oshawa 7 - Scarborough 0; Game five: Port Perry 2 - Wingham 1; Game six: New Liskeard 3 - Oshawa 1; Game seven: Wingham 8 - New Lis- keard 5; Game eight: Wingham 5 - Port Perry 0; Game nine: Port Perry 4 - Wingham 1. The core players of this team have been to- ther through many seasons and the highly eveloped skills they exhibit and the team spir- it which they have are highly admired by the parents, fans and followers who watch them regularly. The new players who have been add- ed to the team have also done an excellent job of filling spots when needed, encouraging the oth- ers through thick and thin, and honing their . skills while waiting for their time to be core players. The coaching staff of Ron Redman, Wayne Venning and Bob VanderSlagt have played a large part in the success of this ball club over the years and should be recognized for the hard work they have done to bring this group of young men to their third All-Ontario Championship. To the citizens of Port Perry - there are many young people in town that we should be proud of, and the members of the Port Perry Juvenile Fastball team are only a few of them. Hitters for the week: Brough - run, two walks, single; Card - run, five singles, three RBIs; Co- chrane - two runs, three walks; Empringham - run, single, double; Laird - three runs, walk, |. single, double, home run, four RBIs; MacLen- nan - run, two walks, double, RBI; McBride - run, three walks, three singles; Moase - two runs, two walks, home run, two RBIs; Smart - run, two singles, two doubles, triple, RBI; Van- derSlagt - single. } The Merchants' playoffs start on Tuesday, Aug. 16 when Bowmanville visits the south dia- mond at 8:30 p.m. If the Merchants win this game, they will visit Greenbank on Thursday, Aug. 18 at 8 p.m. If they lose, the time will be an- nounced once the results of three other games are known. Gamblers clinch first place with 2-1 victory The Oshawa City and Dis- trict Fastball season came to a close last Thursday night and the Greenbank Gamblers edged the Oshawa Juveniles by a 2-1 margin and finished atop the nine-team league. Following the Gamblers in the league race were Scarbo- rough Royals, Oshawa Mickey Finns, Oshawa Flying Squir- rels, Port. Perry Antrims, Oshawa Juveniles, Oshawa Double B Jrs., Port Perry Juve- niles and Bowmanville. The league playoffs get un- derway this week with Green- bank playing at home on Thurs- day night at 8:15 p.m. versus either Port Perry Juveniles or Bowmanville. (A Tuesday night game in Port Perry will deter- mine who will meet Green- bank.) The playoff format for the league this year will take the form of a double knockout tour- nament with all nine teams par- ticipating, with winners stay- ing in the winner's side and losers going to the loser bracket. Two defeats will eliminate any team from further competition for the league championship. Playoff fastball is always the most exciting part of the season and starting this week fastball fans should see some great ac- tion on the local diamonds. By winning the league sched- ule, Greenbank will be the home team in playoff games, re- gardless of where the game is played. Toronto Gators to Meet City League All-Stars in Benefit Game The Oshawa City and Dis- trict Fastball League All-Stars will play the world champion Toronto Gators in a benefit game for city league president Wayne Allan who suffered seri- ous injuries in a car accident a few weeks ago. Mr. Allan was involved in a motor vehicle accident return- ing home from the Toronto Ga- tor - Sioux City Iowa game held in Port Perry and is still a pa- tient at Toronto St. Michael's Hospital. The game will be held at Oshawa Durham Fields on Tuesday, Sept. 6 and will see an All-Star City League lineup tackle the Gators in a nine- inning encounter. Game time will be 7:30 p.m. and all proceeds from the game will go to the Wayne Allan fami- ly to assist with expenses relat- ed to the mishap. lakefront diamonds.
