"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, August 16, 1994 - 17 SPORTS A NO RA ARPA TRS St Ty Sh JEFF MITCHELL / PORT PERRY STAR Adam Johnston dives for a smash as partner George Bright looks on in the men's final during a doubles tournament at Port Perry Tennis Club Sunday. The duo were topped by Jay Neill and Ken Elliott. In the women's final, Tasha VanderWyst and Diane Burt defeated Jackie Duserbury and lise Stiller. Squirts lose heartbreakers to tough Campbeliford squad On Aug. 2, Campbellford came to town to battle our Fast- ball Squirt All Stars sponsored by the Canadian Legion. The game was a nailbiter going into the last inning as veteran Mark Richardson was locked in a pitching duel with his counter- part. With the score 1-1 after six innings, Campbellford surged ahead with five runs in the sev- enth and Port responded with three of their own and in fact had the game end with three runners left on base. A win was not to be for our boys as we couldn't cash in several bases- loaded situations. Mark absorbed the loss de- spite 13 Ks and allowed nine hits and six walks. Matt Sker- ratt had two hits with singles collected by Mark, Braden Tar- botton, Aaron Lycett, Tim Jones and Jeff Kane. Sean Jef- frey and Chris Skerratt earned two walks each. The defensively sound Camp- bellford lads (and lassie!) again proved to be too much for our squad to handle when we went to their park on Aug. 8. We jumped out to an early 2-0 lead and again had a 4-2 lead but a couple of errors, mental mis- takes and timely Campbellford hitting allowed them back into the game. They surged out to an 11-4 lead thanks to a big five- run fourth inning. Our Junior Legionaires didn't roll over however, as they almost pulled off the comeback yet again with two runs in each of the sixth and seventh innings to make it 11-8. In the seventh inning, we left two runners on and had the po- tential winning run in the on- - deck circle but Sean's hard line drive was grabbed by the third baseman to stymie our efforts to force a third game. Congratulations were offered to Campbellford who will now represent our zone in the OASA championships. Hits for Port Perry were by Matt S. (two), Chris Monsma (two), Sean (one), Mark (one), Aaron (one), Braden (one), and Tim (one). Chris Skerratt scored twice after drawing BBs. Mark was charged with the loss on just four hits, seven Ks and five BBs and at times wasn't backed up well by our field. Tim came on in relief and shut down Campbellford for the last two innings with one hit, two Ks and no walks. On July 28, the Legion squad defeated Richmond Hill 10-4 in a league game with an eight- run fifth inning eruption by our offence turning the tide in our favor. Hits for Port were by Aa- ron, Chris M., Matt Breen, Mark (single, double and triple), Matt S., Braden, Jeff Kane and Chris S. Tim collected the win in relief on three hits, three Ks and no walks over three innings. Mark started from the "one" position and al- lowed no hits, five BBs and had five Ks. 7-8 Mite action Once again the Power Rang- ers had to face the Country Style team but this time the Power Rangers lost the game 28-12. Both teams played a sol-- id game with a lot of good hit- ting. Great game everybody. A big thank you to all the par- ents who helped out with the games and practices from the Power Rangers. : JEFF MITCHELL / PORT PERRY STAR Aaron Dejong takes a mighty swing at ball during the final game of the season for young T-ball players in Port Perry Fri- day night. On Wednesday, Aug., 10, the Port Perry Bantam Mer- chants were at home for a tilt with Newmarket. Port need- ed late-inning heroics, and won a nailbiter 8-7. Matt Kay worked the rub- ber in the early innings and looked good coming back from an injury. Matt put the ball in play and took advan- tage of steady defence behind him, highlighted by an over- the-shoulder catch, a 1a Wil- lie Mays, by Brad Morton. In the first two frames, the Merchants' offence was click- ing on all cylinders. In fact, they had a 6-0 lead after two innings and a 6-2 lead after three. Runs were scored by Carl Phoenix, Brad Morton, Xyan Williamson, Mike Phoenix and Matt Kay on hits by Williamson, Mike Phoenix and Kay. ] The only thing that could stop the Merchants now was a miraculous comeback by Newmarket. Unfortunately, it happened. The visitors scored five runs in the next three in- nings and took a 7-6 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh. The only thing that could | save the Merchants now was a miraculous comeback. For- tunately, it happened. Ryan Williamson led off the inning with an effortless Wednesday, Aug. 17, against stroke into the gap. (Does grunting argghh, when mak- ing contact, classify as effort- less?) He peacefully ran the bases and ended up with a triple. (Does sliding hard into the bag, and causing the third baseman to do a near flip in the air, classify as peaceful?) Ryan's aggres- siveness put him in scoring position for Jason Logan. Lo- ° gan got busted inside but managed to hit a duck-snort over the head of the second: baseman to cash in William- son. After taking second on the throw to the plate, Logan took third on a wild pitch and represented the winning run for Tom Chambers. Tom sent a deep sacrifice fly to centre and the Merchants eked out a heartstopper. The next night, Port rolled into Thornhill and stumbled out, suffering a 9-2 loss. Port looked completely dead in this one and will most likely forget the whole game. One bright spot was the play of those who did not get the starting nod, coming off the bench to score a couple of runs and break the Thornhill hurler's shutout. Mike Phoe- nix, Brad Shanley and Mark Versage had hits in the late innings to make the score somewhat respectable. Port's next action is East Gwillimbury.
