The 17-year-old Port Perry High School student is a mem- ber of three Oshawa Kinsmen Camaros Baton Club teams. The International Open Com- petition, hosted by Canada in Newmarket, Ontario, saw Kar- en's teams win two gold medals and onesilver. The three teams are made up of 16, eight and 14 members, of which Karen is the only Scugog Township member. The week previous the same three teams won one gold, one silver and one bronze medal at the Canadian Championships. Two days later the team went on to win the Canadian Grand Na- tional Championship in Theme Corps. More than 900 athletes from 14 countries took part in the Ca- nadian and World Baton Twirl- ing Championships. Although it was the goal of the club to win the competitions it was still a pleasant surprise, Karen said. Baton twirling has been pop- ular in Canada for more than 40 ears and has evolved into a ighly competitive internation- al sport with Olympic aspira-. tions. It combines dance, athlet- ics, and a technical mastery of twirling into a fast-paced, high- ly-demanding performance. Karen Brozina, of Scugog Island, recently won sev- eral medals at baton twirling championships.
