TO TITY Rasta anak ual che cal _A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, August 23 1994-17. Ee eH SPOR Juveniles win and lose Gam This week's sports report for the Juvenile Merchants Fast- ball team is sponsored by Hau- gen's, Williamson GM, Preci- sion Construction and Edwards Construction. The league playoffs for the Oshawa and District Men's League began this week, and the Port Perry Merchants chalked up a win against Bow- manville and a loss against Greenbank. The playoffs are a double knockout format. On Tuesday, in the game against Bowmanville, the score was close and Port was lucky to advance with a win. A run was scored in the second and third innings by the Merchants to take the lead, but the smart pitching by Bowmanville's Keith Adamson did not allow another run to cross the plate. Goreski's Marina hosts "Top Bass' tournament Dave Pollard and Michael MacNeil pocketed more than $2,300 as winners of this years Top Bass Fishing Series event held at Goreski's on Sunday. They are seen above with tournament organizer Ted Gallone. lbs. at Omemee on Pigeon Lake. Alan Goreskl and Ted Gallone flank the third place winners from Sunday's Top Bass Tournament, Greg and Greg and Steve Delyea of Oshawa whose catch weighed 14.20 Ted Gallone, organizer of the Top Bass Fishing Series said the day went very well and they would like to run a similar tournament from Goreski's again next year. IS Card pitched a strong game for the Port Juveniles and an un- earned run in the fifth was the only Bowmanville score. Card struck out 10, walked two, and allowed four hits for a final 2-1 score. On Thursday, the Merchants travelled north to Greenbank minus a few regular players who were sick, workingor on va- cation. The Juveniles had lots of optimism as they scored their first run in the second inning. Card held Greenbank until the fourth when home runs by Greg Newell and Paul Goreski put the Gamblers ahead 3-1 for the only Greenbank runs of the game. In the bottom of the sev- enth with two out, Port was able to get a runner on first. An error in the outfield allowed a runner to score, and the tying run was threatening at third base. A long fly ball by MacLennan was tracked down in the field, end- ing the game at a 3-2 win for Greenbank. Hitters for the week: Card - two runs, single, double, RBI; Cochrane - single; Laird - two singles; Linton - run, single; McBride - single; Shrigley - walk, double; Timms - single, RBI; Vander Slagt - run, single, triple, RBI.
