Since this spring Jay Thibert and Bill Brock have been lovingly nursing the area surrounding a Canada Post Super Mailbox at the corner of Alma St. and Gibson Dr. and it's now in full bloom, featuring everything from towering sunflowers to Queen Ann's Lace. The project began when Mr. Thibert, who lives on the lot beside the mailbox, decided along with his wife to encourage a few plants to grow. "Bev and I both looked at it "~as a spot where we could let nature have its way," he said. The two began selective grooming of the road allowance around the box, allowing plants that occurred there naturally to grow while still tending to the grass. As time went on Mr. Thibert transplanted a few more plants he found growing nearby. This year Mr. Brock, a neighbor with a decidedly green thumb, took an interest and got involved, transplanting a few of the flowers from his COMMUNITY CALE NDAR Community Calendar runs each week in either the Port Perry Star or Scugog Shores providing space for local non-profit organizations to receive coverage for their important approaching events. No flak has come their way from Canada Post, and reaction by neighbors has been positive, say the men. They add that other neighborhoods with the mailboxes could benefit by following their example. "It's not as if we put any money into it; just standing here and watering and weeding it," said Mr. Brock. He acknowledged that not all sites can be manicured in the way his neighborhood's has been, but says each has potential. "There's something you can do at every site." Mr. Thibert agreed. "It can be as small and simple as it wants," he said. "In many cases it's letting what's fos come up, and tending it a it." Mr. Brock said he'd be glad to talk -and give advice to anyone who'd like to try a similar effort in their neighborhood. He can be reached at 985-7134.
