They have four children, including daughter Erma and her hus- band Bob Lilley of Port Perry. On Wednesday, May 11, the Durham West Veterinary Sci- ence Club gathered for the first meeting of the season. We started off the meeting by saying the 4-H pledge and got to know each other by introducing ourselves to the rest of the group, Our leader, Dianne Mor- rison, invited two friends who brought along a snake and a toad. They talked to us about what reptiles and amphibians eat and where they live, etc. Our second meeting took place at the Uxbridge Veteri- nary Clinic at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 2. When I ar- rived I was guided into an oper- ating room where the vet had al- ready begun to dissect a dog. When asked why it had died, he said it had been euthanized only hours earlier because it was a vicious stray and couldn't have been helped. In the begin- ning I found this very disgust- ing, but it was later explained that the animals would have been killed anyway and were in- stead going to a good cause. Later on in the evening, we picked our executive council. Erin Vernooy and Mark Kears were picked as our co- presidents, Tracy Wilson and Mark Vernooy as our vice- presidents, Nicole Hockley and Crystal Reid as secretaries, and Katie Coates and Ed as press re- porters. Our third meeting was held at the Brelmar Vet. Clinic in Sunderland. Unfortunately, only a few members were able to show up. We dissected a calf that had died of unknown caus- es to look at its digestive tract and see how it functions. The meeting ended at 9 pm. and we were given pop and doughnuts. The next meeting took place at Kdgeview Farm near Sunder- land. Unfortunately, I got lost and missed the first 156 minutes of the meeting. When I finally did arrive, we did an experi- ment using flour, water and paper towels to show how the villiin the stomach work. We later made mayonnaise, dissected a chicken, and watched a video on digestion. A special thanks 8 to the ompson family for the use of their home. Our fifth meeting was at Northwood Exotic Animal Farm in Seagrave. We were giv- en a tour of the farm by Andrea Durham, also a member of the club, and were able to see ani- mals such as tigers, lions, bob- cats, monkeys and wolves up close. They also fed the baby ti- gers while we were there, while a group shot of the club was tak- en by several family members.
