_-- "A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, August 23 1994 - S__ Glenn Malcolm seeks regional seat By Kelly Lown Port Perry Star Nestleton native Glenn Mal- colm will be seeking the region- al councillor seat in this fall's election. 'Mr. Malcolm who was plan- ning to announce his intention to run for mayor this week, will be seeking the regional council- lor seat, saying his brother Da- vid's announcement to run for mayor, has ruled out that race for him. "The (regional councillor) seat will still get me to the re- gional level, if I am successful," he said. Getting back onto council is important to Mr. Malcolm. He wants to get back inta.getting to know the public, and letting the public get to know him. "I am heading towards the mayor seat. I have every inten- tion to run for mayor again. This gives the public the chance to see what I am all about," he said. He feels his personality is one of his strong points, as people know what they are getting when they talk to him. "They will always know where they stand with me," he added. Calling the present council "non-committal" Mr. Malcolm feels he is running for a wide- open position as the current seat holder Yvonne Christie-has yet to announce her plans for the fall election. His decision to run for the Glenn Malcolm seat has nothing to do with the way he feels Mrs. Christie has performed, he said. "(Yvonne) has been a great Regional Councillor, but I would like to see her move up," he said. Mr. Malcolm has no real qualms with the duties the present council has performed calling it "a reasonable job," but he did say he would like to see a change. He does have his concerns, however, with some projects the current council has undertak- en. He would like to see less spending of reserve funds for large projects, which he says leaves the township strapped. What he sees as the two larg- est unresolved issues, the gam- ing facility on the Island and the fairgrounds, he feels there is al- ways a compromise. Although he can't say what side he would take on any issue, as he has not seen all the facts, he says everything can be set- tled in one way or another. "I will work to negotiate and compromise and come out with a fair solution for everyone. Everything can be resolved. You Just have to have the will," he said. "I would like to bring a new energy to council," where he feels if he is elected as regional councillor and later runs for mayor, the residents will like to see that type of overlap of lead- ership. "I enjoy politics and I have lots of energy to put into it. I feel I will work effectively in co- ordination with the new mayor, whoeverit may be." Mr. Malcolm would also like to see the public become more * involved in what goes on inside the council chambers. The way he feels this could be achieved is if meetings were held at night. Mr. Malcolm does possess po- litical experience. After win- ning the Ward 4 seat in the 1988 election, Mr. Malcolm lost a close race for the mayor's seat against the incumbent Howard Hall in the last municipal elec- "tion. He also had an unsuccess- ful bidin party politics. The 41-year-old Nestleton na-- tive owns Malcolm's Fireplace, Pool and Spa of Lindsay. He makes his home on the farm in Nestleton with wife Arlene, and daughters Heather, Alison and Erin.
