"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Wednesday, Sept. 7, 1994 - 19 by Bobbie Drew ucation The days are getting shorter and, lately, cooler and every- one's thoughts are turning to 'back to school." In particular I'm sure there are many par- ents who have been thinking of Sept. 6 on those few rainy days last week. In the first few weeks of school the majority of calls I re- ceive are related to transporta- tion. In June of 1991, acomprehen- sive audit of student transpor- tation was completed which outlined for us several ways that the system could econo- mize. For September of that Rally Sunday, Sept. 11 Shirley Lee September is here! School children are back to the books and church and community fall activities start. Sunday, Sept. 11 will be Rally Sunday at the Church where the Sunday School children re- ceive their attendance awards and congratulations, so as a congregation come and support the young people and the teach- ers for the start of a new year. Choir practice will be starting on Thursday evening at 7:30 p.m. and new members are more than welcome. The Fidelis Unit, UCW, will hold their meeting on Wednes- day at 1:30 p.m. with special speaker Donna Wannamaker of Seagrave. The evening unit will meet on Wednesday, Sept. 14 at 8 p.m. in the church basement. The theme for the meeting is the "Sandwich Generation". Registration for Brownies, Guides and Pathfinders will be held on Monday, Sept. 12 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Greenbank Hall. Registration fee is $25 per girl. Brownies are ages six, seven and eight; Guides ages nine, 10 and 11 and Pathfinders age 12 to 15. Girls are welcome to join at any time; the programs are designed so girls can have fun and participate fully without any previous Guiding experi- ence. Would you like your five- year-old daughter, grand- daughter or niece to have the chance to join the worldwide sis- terhood of Guiding? You can make it happen by volunteering to be aleader of Sparks, the pre- Brownie group for five-year- olds. For many years, Green- bank has had lively, busy groups of Brownies, Guides and Pathfinders. But we need Sparks to complete our family! This year, Sparks introduces a new two-year program, with five-year-olds starting this year and continuing as six-year-olds next year. In Sept. 1995, Brown- les will be a two-year program, for seven and eight-year-olds. There is training available and lots of help from experienced leaders! Call now for more infor- mation from Marie Powell, 985- 8965. My thanks to Iva Phoenix who took over the news for the month of August while I took a holiday. While taking this holiday, Murray and I accompanied Mary June and Glenn Smith of Scugog Island on a ten-day trip to the Eastern provinces includ- ing the beautiful Cabot Trail and via the northern U.S.A. In subsequent years other changes have taken place: hav- ing drop off and pickup points where feasible rather than pick- ing up at individual homes; transporting students only to their designated school; contin- ued exploration of sharing routes with the Separate School Board. Although there are no major route and time changes for the Scugog area this year, there will be in the next two school years. All elementary and secondary schools are now hooked into the main computer at the Board Of- fice and all students and their addresses are being entered to computerize routes. This is being done area by area, with Oshawa and Whitby the first to be done effective this September. Ajax and Pickering will be completed by next Janu- ary and then the entire north area of Scugog, Uxbridge and Brock. At the same time the Separate Board is computeriz- ing its system, and then the two will be blended to complete the sharing of routes. It is impera- tive that parents provide the school with their 911 address to allow the boards to implement the computerized system of Back by popular demand Terry £0 to speak on "Treading the Spiritual Path" Scugog Memorial Lib Thursday, September 17h 7pm-9pm Everyone Wecstin (Organized by the Baha'is of Scugog) Baha'i Faith Information i Sunday from 8pm to 10pm at 1667 King St., Prince Albert.
