Tumbles from boat, man treated for hypothermia A Scarborough man was treated for hypothermia after boat- ers fished him from the waters of Lake Scugog on Labor Day. ~ Durham Regional Police said the 32-year-old man was fish- ing in a rented boat when he lost control of the craft and fell in the water off the eastern shore of Scugog Island. The incident occurred around 11:30 in the morning Monday (Sept. 5), police said. It's unclear how long the man was in the water after tumbling from the 12-foot aluminum boat. The man was rescued by boaters and taken to shore, then rushed by ambulance to Community Memorial Hospital in Port Perry, police said. Mr. Rickey said there are 21 homes backing onto the lot, and people are worried their quiet, rural lifestyle would be shattered if pit operations were carried on there. "They're really upset," he said of his neighbors. "There have been many people involved." Ward 4 Councillor David Dietlein has supplied the resi- dents with information on opposing land uses, but said there are few options available to them. The province can issue a wayside licence to alandowner without seeking comments, he explained. It is only when a pit is awarded a tender to supply aggregate for a government project that the municipality is asked to comment. "It's very difficult for the res- idents to fight...because there's no mechanism for them," said Mr. Dietlein. Fair fiddlers World renowned fiddle team, Graham and Eleanor Town- gsend will be appearing at the Durham Central Fair as special guests Sept. 9. "The Durham Central Fair runs from Sept. 8-11 at the Oro- no Fairgrounds and the Old Time Fiddler's Contest starts at 7 p.m. on Sept. 9. Meeting is Thursday "It (a licence) is a time bomb; there's no mechanism for citizen input." Mr. Dietlein's Green Umbrella -- a coalition of local environmental organizations -- hosted neighbors of the property last Tuesday night and gave them tips on how to mount oppo- sition if the wayside licence is granted. Wants to talk For his part, Mr. Attia wants to keep lines of communication with his neighbors open. The last thing he wants is a con- frontation over the property. "I'm very cooperative," he said. He said development of the land would be a vast improve- ment over the acres of brush there now -- he described it as a "fire hazard" which is a mag- net for dirt-bike riders and beer drinkers. His preference is to develop housing on a portion of the land and donate the remainder to the township as open space; a golf course is another option. Mr. Attia added that ifa pit is opened on the property it would not be intrusive -- opera- tions would take place in the middle of the parcel and be well- buffered by forest -- with little truck traffic along the area's rural roads.
